Yeah, big swords being a strong weapon class in S&S is part of it, the other part being that using big slow weapons with large range is good in 2D sidescrollers to maximise the power of your single jump attack. Did it a lot in the Sorrow Castlevania games.

I've played both Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary, and SAS is far better in pretty much every way. Nicer looking artstyle, better combat, better world design, and actual functional controls. Absolutely not. When I first played through this game I unironically loved the artstyle, and I still think it's great. The game genuinely has a bleak and salty look to it. It's the only non-from soulslike that gets the dreamlike dark fantasy atmosphere right. The only thing I'd criticize is the character faces, which are a bit strange looking at first, but are kind of an acquired taste.
Nevermind the shitty artstyle on the characters, but some of the boss designs like the Queen of Smiles genuinely unnerved me.

I understand that the dev team are new and I completely fucking get how they fucked up so much shit
But one thing just baffles me, did they not let beta testing happen? Why the fuck is a game, based around a large amount of platforming with incredibly fucking high damage, using fucking weight systems for their jump distance.
You go above 25% weight and each fucking jump it's "remove all armor + weapon, now jump, repeat for next platforming section".
Not to mention the entire concept of "lolz you got hit by an enemy off screen while jumping so now you fall and die KEK TOP TIER"
Plus everything is more or less OP except some utter shit things like slow hitter weapons or whips

I had this on the Vita which says a lot as I thought P4G was the only game I ever bought for it until I remembered just now. The art style and animation really bring it down and come together in a way I'd describe as awkward and wonky, and you can't stop noticing it. Of course it's not flash game tier since the content and depth in it outshine almost every flash game, but it feels a bit like you're playing one. The real main gripe is that Souls doesn't work well in 2D, since exploration becomes much less interesting and it relies too heavily then on the other elements (where S&S isn't strong enough to match). If you really liked Hollow Knight though, I suppose give it a try.

HK has a tone that is very much like Dark Souls, which is only further reinforced by having the death penalty Dark Souls popularized.
HK definitely has a distinct identity from Dark Souls aside from that, unlike SnS which does everything it can to be 2d Dark Souls Metroidvania. But saying HK is nothing like Dark Souls is silly.
The lack of momentum makes the controls feel like shit to anyone who's played actual good platformers. Also, jumping fails to work at inopportune times. Often, I would run at an edge to jump, hit the jump button, and the bug dude straight up doesn't jump. He just walks straight off the cliff into the abyss. Also, see I can't fully put my finger on why it has shit controls other than the above, but they just feel off somehow. Platformers are one of my favorite genres and I've probably played 100+ in my life. And when I started up Hollow Knight, something just felt wrong. I was failing to make the simplest of jumps I could make in pretty much any other game. The controls were the primary reason I dropped the game and didn't play beyond the first couple hours.

The soundtrack is great,I specially like the last boss theme and the theme that leads to the final battle. Not a big fan of the art but it grows on you eventually..or not.

Oh yeah, on second thought, I actually do remember the moment I decided to quit. It wasn't an enemy encounter at all. It was a point where you had to jump across a bunch of platforms. The game kept making my character walk right off the ledge even when I definitely pressed A before my feet left the ledge. The cumbersome controls were a bigger problem for me than any enemy.

I agree that S&S is the true 2D Dark Souls but it has to be said HK evoked an atmosphere that almost nearly perfectly captured the original feeling of the original Dark Souls. More so than any other Soulslike or even both DS2 and DS3.
That being said, play S&S you fucks. It has godly couch coop.

About half of the floor is a death pit. The other half is patrolled by feet of this boss and they can knock you down into a death pit.
There are some platforms above. Platforms are splashed with flamethrowers every few seconds. Boss can also attack you on platforms, though, to be fair, with huge telegraphs.
You must climb the platforms and hit boss weakpoints that are moving in the air near the platforms. They are not always easily reachable, even with longer weapons. You might want to jump and attack them mid-air, but at this point you don't have double jump, so you'll likely take some fall damage. You might also get knocked down into a death pit after a fall.
It might get stressful. I personally like like this boss for interesting design, but dropping into insta-death pits can be frustrating. No other boss have death pits or outright insta-kill moves, even Witch of the Lake, as someone will mention her here at some point.
The difference is, Hollow Knight was *LIKE* Dark Souls, in that it understood what Dark Souls was trying to achieve, and converted that to a 2D space. It borrowed enough to be reminiscent of Dark Souls but did enough of its own thing to be able to take what Dark Souls did and port it into a new space in a way that felt both intentionally homagenous but also original.
Salt and Sanctuary was *like* Dark Souls in that it was a straight rip-off, and it did what it had to do to be like Dark Souls regardless of what that meant for the game, good or bad.

It's because there's so much happening on Yea Forums at any given moment, so many people commenting on so many things, that any patterns you notice are purely confirmation bias.

As other's have mentioned, it's the art I dislike. I feel kind of shitty dismissing the gameplay because of that, but I never really had all the much an interest to begin with considering I've played so much of From's games and they're superior in most ways.
