Yeah, but it's not really clear how much of that was Venom just following orders as Big Boss Jr. and how much of it was a parallel in mindset. Outer Heaven -- as the military state -- was ultimately Big Boss's vision and project, not Venom's. Obviously Venom got on board with it, but it's not clear why. Either way he's culpable, of course.

If Ocelot could snap out of his programming, so could Big Boss and even then, he probably loved being "de evil big bad epic badass soldier takin over the world with dem nuks and all" to the point where it became his life, just like how Big Boss lusted war to the point where it became his life.

Venom was fiercely loyal to Big Boss even before MSF's destruction, though. Either way, the fact he loves being Big Boss (which I believe) doesn't necessarily mean he hopped on board Outer Heaven for the same reason Big Boss created it. I'm not suggesting Venom was held hostage by Big Boss or anything, just that their motivations may not have been in parallel. It's clear in TPP that they have somewhat different personalities, I don't think it's a mistake to consider that that continued even after the events of TPP.

How similar he is to Big Boss in PW doesn't matter. Venom in MGSV is pretty different from Big Boss in MGSV. You could argue that if Venom didn't have a doppelganger to pass off his baggage to that he would've made the same decisions as Big Boss, but that's not at all clear. Venom seems uniquely sentimental and guilt-ridden by the events of Ground Zeroes, whereas Big Boss fucks off to play beer pong with Gray Fox and create his new toy in Africa.

I'm not defending Venom, you dullard. I'm suggesting that they were different. I'm not even arguing Venom had any kind of noble interests at heart when he hopped on board with Outer Heaven, just that he may not have shared the exact same sincerity in its goals as Big Boss, given it wasn't even his idea.

I'm saying Big Boss is by all accounts not the kind of guy that weep over the loss to begin with, and this is corroborated not only by his attitude toward Venom (and Miller) but also how he expresses his point of view in MG2. Do you really think Big Boss is the kind of guy that would smear ashes on his face and have hallucinations sourced from pure guilt? I don't.

My interpretation was always that he *was* being possessed by Liquid in MGS2, but that he shifted to a prosthetic and hypnosis for the sake of stability. MGS4 puts a lot of emphasis on the reveal of the prosthetic arm, and I always figured that was why. It doesn't really matter either way. Everything about Ocelot in MGS4 is pretty boring.

I just feel bad for liquid as a character how he got literally dumped into a garbage can as a recurring villain with the arm removal, and then had his character basically treated as an utterly pathetic snot nosed kid in 5 (Who failed genetics as a study)

But his hallucinations with respect to Paz are directly linked by the game itself to his underlying memories as the Medic. Assuming Big Boss would carry the same kind of sentimentality/guilt isn't corroborated at all.

He's sincere about its efficacy as a system. But he's very much a calculating man of system, not a man of sentiment. His "we're the same, you and I" speech to Snake is cold projection, not actual sympathy. I'm not saying he didn't have a benevolent bone in his body, but the system is what mattered to him.
