I'm surprised by how many people are taken aback by the sack of King's Landing, that's just how things were in medieval times. It carried on all the way up nearly into the present too.

I'm reminded of the 30 years war, there was a city that got occupied and a group of soldiers gang raped a little girl so badly she died. The commander ordered the men found and executed but they had already escaped the city by the time the order was given.

Episode 5 actually did a great job of showing how little control commanders had over their men when it came to the sacking of cities.

The books contain a million more details and characters, extensive inner monologue that is crucial to understanding any of the main characters, and a ton of worldbuilding. Later, when he gets thrown in the black cells after his failed coup ONLY THEN does he feel like he's failed to keep his promise to Lyanna. This makes no sense if Jon is her son because Jon's relative safety hasn't changed at all since he left for the wall as far as Ned knows. What he HAS failed to to is get Robert to recall the assassination order against Daenerys before he died.
