It's not okay to like Rogue though. The worst AC story and some of the most atrocious writing in all of fiction. They shit it out only because Black Flag did so good and they knew they weren't going to be able to fit naval gameplay into the next title.

Unity is fucking boring, don't trust these memers about how it's the unsung hero of the franchise or some bullshit like that

It would need to be on-foot also, have crew members matter or at least have the important figures on the ship have personalities (i.e. Sunless Sea/Skies), have mythological islands, monsters, etc., let you rape and pillage, form alliances, be not only a captain but any other type of job on a ship, and allow mutinies if you suck as a captain or if you want to overthrow the captain, and maybe also work for countries as a privateer or as part of their navy. Maybe even romance but nothing deep to appease the people who read pirate romance novels

I don't even care about PvP, but I do want a satisfying game loop and escalating challenges and it simply just doesn't have either of those things.

It was cool in AC2 because it felt like it was going somewhere and in AC1 it was okay as a way to explain the controls and limitations of the game and didn’t really take you out of things too much
Brotherhood, revelations and 3 totally sucked at it, but they had to try since it had already been set up in 2 pretty well that that’s what was going on
They effectively dropped it out in 4, but didn’t go the whole way.
