SM is only hated because it's different in both character design, tone, and structure to previous series. It's actually the most animated the anime has ever been outside of movies and it's astounding that this is the case in an indefinite franchise with weekly episodes. It gets better animation than most anime in general. While I do miss Gyms (moreso in the games, which have been a garbage fire since XY), the anime is fine doing this. It probably has the largest cast of recurring supporting characters and unique plotlines compared to prior series, and just because they're not wandering through the same forest on the way to the next Gym for 100 episodes doesn't mean it's bad. Instead, it encourages more creativity on the writing staff.
