How did they alienate it though? There are just barely less players at this point playing 6 than DoA5 back in day which had no weird shitty PR marketing leading up to the launch. I think this has been just natural progression of the IP fading in general and fighting games becoming less and less popular compared to 10 years ago, which can be compared further to 20 years ago when fighting games had their peak.
As for like sales numbers, yeah I wonder about those, physical sales were supposedly worse than 5 in same timespan but that applies to every game almost these days.
Though I think I know what you mean by killing the IP, that's definitely in the works with just barebones of a game in itself, that certainly didn't benefit anything from the PR campaign itself. Well i played mostly when the game had ~400 players and i only got to rank D so all characters i have ever encountered were the two free sluts.

I wanted to be contraian so i picked daigo and it was insane. I believe he has one of the most damaging side step attack in the game. So i won most if the fights just by spamming side steps all day. The most absurd was when you aligned wall with the side step, so as bonus you got full juggle combo off wall.

He isnt wrong though. I accepted every single match, even the 0 bars type and they all played fine. Dunno why, but it looked to me like doa6 has actually good netcode.

Only exception was when your opponent had toaster which run the game on 2FPS. Then even your game slowed down to his levels. But that was rare.
