Engineers are basically the only non-anthropomorphic alien in Halo, and they're only in a couple of games.
Grunts, brutes, jackals, elites, prometheans (apart from crawlers, which are basically caniforms), they're all essentially anthropomorphic, with two legs, two arms, a head, some digits at the end of each limb, a thorax, an abdomen, two eyes, two ears (I think), etc.

Fair enough, but the example in the OP seems particularly egregious. Even Elites from Halo are probably better because they do have a pretty distinctive and unique design which tries to distinguish itself from humans.

I haven't played through all the campaign so I can't comment on the story, which I know was criticised, so it might be that there is valid criticism in that department.
But from a gameplay perspective it is a solid game. They've brought Halo up to date. The guns sound and feel better than ever before - they feel like a modern shooter. The movement mechanics are really good as well, I think, adding a whole new toolbox of tactical options.
Halo SHOULD be pushing forward and innovating. Games that stay the same will wither and die - there will be no reason to play new instalments. Think of other long-running series which are still successful: Zelda, GTA, Mario. Each of those games adds new innovations to each release. If they didn't, those series would have become irrelevant.

I've been playing Halo ever since I got the first game with an OG Xbox back in 2002 when I was 11 years old. And I think Halo 5 is a great game personally, although like I say I haven't played the campaign so I don't know about the story. I need to play that. That requires getting an Xbox One which I just never got round to doing.

Also, by the way, if you've only played Halo CE on MCC, I would thoroughly recommend playing the original Xbox version of Halo CE, either on an OG Xbox or an Xbox 360. The "Anniversary" version included in MCC is based on the buggy PC port which has numerous glitches (pic related). I think I also read that the original Xbox version has higher resolution textures than the PC port / Anniversary version, ironically, because apparently the PC port was based on some early pre-release version of the game for some weird reason.
Also, something that REALLY fucking grinds my gears is that Anniversary changes the gun sounds, and you cannot listen to the original gun sounds, even when you switch to the "original" (buggy PC port) graphics.
So yeah, I'd recommend checking out the original Xbox version of Halo, and it runs absolutely fine on a 360, which is probably an easier way to play it these days. That's the game that started this whole phenomenon so it pisses me off that 343 has such a fucking poor version of it.
Alternatively you could look at the PC version, which has those visual bugs of pic related unfortunately, but at least it still has the original gun sounds. And it doesn't have the shitty "updated" graphics of Anniversary.

I've played it on my brother's Xbox. And from what I've played it seems pretty good. Like I say, maybe the story does suck, I haven't played through fully so I can't comment, but the core gameplay looks pretty good in my view.
Also I liked Halo 4 - the story was a bit meh I guess, but serviceable. I liked Halo 4's multiplayer quite a lot; I know some people didn't, but I did. I also liked Reach's quite a lot, which again some people didn't like, but I did. I think the armour abilities and stuff add more variety, which I'm a fan of when I'm playing those games on Xbox Live. With Halo 3, things get pretty samey after a while. Still an amazing game obviously, but I think the additions to later games were good additions.

That's interesting because I like 3, I think it's a good game (especially the campaign). But I do think that people are maybe a bit too obsessed with that game, particularly its multiplayer, as if it is the be all and end all of Halo.

I agree. Which probably isn't surprising since I've been defending 4 and 5. I will admit that 4's story (and probably 5's from the sound of things) is not as strong as the Bungie games. I think maybe they take themselves too seriously in terms of story; the Bungie games were a bit more laid back, with comic relief in the form of Johnson and 343. But I think the gameplay of 4 and 5 is good, personally, and I also like the art style, though I know some people don't.
H2A does look pretty cool, I would definitely like to play it. It looks several orders of magnitude better than CEA. And, importantly, you get the original gun sounds when playing on the original graphics.

Played them for the first time 2 years ago. Grab some of the hd packs and the mods to fix some of the issues and it's a great series to binge through. One mod I heavily recommend is citadel ending for 3, it fits very well and helps fix 3's shit ending slightly, plus it's a great send off.

I liked the game, combat and story and have played it more than the other games in the series. I didn't like the combat at first but once it clicked (after about four hours) I loved it. It's the only game in the series that feels like a sci-fi space opera detective game, not a summer blockbuster popcorn flick where you can turn your brain off with all the other mouthbreathers.
