Fan demands were a bit boring, while the Piranha Plant was a legitimate surprise and a nice character.

I like Shadow as a character and I thought he would be a reasonable addition, especially since I have a lot of nostalgia for him and associate him with Nintendo to a degree as I grew up with Adventure 2 on Gamecube.

But if every single character was predictable then it would be boring, and if every single character was something I specifically thought should be in, it'd be lame as shit for everyone else. Plant offers the same ridiculousness and unexpectedness I felt as a kid when I unlocked Game and Watch. And I absolutely appreciate that.

Surprise is so temporary, though. If you’re still super impressed by Piranha Plant I wouldn’t try to take that away from you, but I find his gameplay and screen-presence kind of boring, honestly. The reveal was no doubt shocking, but the lasting effect of characters like Ridley and especially K. Rool and Simon is far stronger.

Plant is in because they wanted a character to be an early adopter/pre-order bonus and he's a good pick for that. A character literally everyone recognizes but wouldn't be too mad if he wasn't in their base game that was probably easy as shit to model and animate given his body type. People mas it wasn't some huge third party fan demand character like Geno are retarded, because first of all Square would probably want a cut of that pie instead of him literally being given away.

Also he's funny and a blast to play as in free for all's even if he sucks competitively so I enjoy playing as him from time to time. He's a welcome addition.

I'd get over Plant if he did something fun or interesting, but not only is his moveset a series is generic biting attacks, his playstyle is "slow zoner who has to run away" and we have plenty of those already. He's boring to use, boring to play against and feels like a waste when you realize the devtime spent on P. Plant could have been used on literally any character.

Even among the "silly wacky unexpected characters" he's still the most boring. Wii Fit stands out because of her weird hitboxes and on demand buffs/heals, G&W is extremely visually distinct, no one in the game moves like ROB does, ect, ect.
Sakurai's excuse for working on Plant is also garbage, "I thought that putting in Heroes and villains was boring so I wanted something else," as if there aren't a ton of character who don't fit that description already that were banished to Assist Trophy purgatory, it's also really rich coming from the same guy who saw fit to add Lucina, Robin and Chrom.
Plant's value as a Smash fighter wore off as soon as we got our hands on him and realized he's nothing special, remember PLANTGANG, PLANT MAINS RISE UP and all of that? Where are they now? The answer is they played Plant for a while, got bored of him and the memes and went back to their mains after a week. Who is this character for? Why would Sakurai waste an entire character development cycle on a bad joke? Plant wasn't even the best generic Mario enemy they could have used.

tl;dr, shit character, shit inclusion, everyone but Waluigi would have been a better choice.

I agree with this post. Another loss is that he didn’t even bring a new franchise or point of Nintendo history like the other out of left field characters did. The point is that he’s a generic enemy, and he ended up just being that for the worse.
Bad choice, but Sakurai seemed determined on this idea. Not every idea is good, and that’s alright I guess.

This, I'm actually glad I didn't have to pay for it which lessened the blow for me but it's still not something you'd buy. Joker comes with a lot of other stuff to justify the price but the plant is the odd man out and it shows. You'll see some occasional posts about it but I think that's just to try to rekindle the faggotry that occurred when it was first shown and by now people realize it wasn't the end-all character nor is it really interesting. For the base roster, fine. For a DLC character, it's flat and this is from someone who's likely not buying the entire pass and probably not any of the fighters depending on who they show at this point.

Fan demand is just one part goes into choosing characters, how fun they might be viewed as by Sakurai and the team/Nintendo, effectiveness in showcasing their personality and moveset potential, their game series potential future, Sakurai's possible own bias and what works financially beneficial for Smash and Nintendo.

I beliee characters like Isaac and Shovel Knight didnt get in due to Isaac not having an alive series, deflating reasons to put him in. and for Shovel Knight he might be seen as just having enough interesting potential compared to others.
