I think it's simply because people are getting increasingly lonely. Despite the growth of social media, people are getting much less interactions than they used. They lack a face to face human contact and having someone live doing something you have an interest in (playing video games) alleviates this because you can speak to them and have them read your message. For big streamers, since they have such a huge chat, your message gets lost which is why you have people donating money to say mundane shit like "have you tried turning off Vsync" to some random technical problem the streamer is having.
For people who watch steamers, unless very rare exceptions, the hook is the streamer instead of what's being streamed (although it also matters, it's not the main draw).

This of course doesn't apply to people watching e-thots, those guys are just beta orbiters.

I dont think this is wrong but it’s oversimplification. Some people watch streamers for the social aspect. Others watch streamers to get better at the game. Others watch it because they find the discussed content interesting like a podcast. Some watch it to orbit girls.

This streamer culture began with the Let's Plays literally clogging the internet with their filth. A low form of entertainment for people so lonely and devoid of social interaction, these videos filled that void for them. Then it advanced to live playing and chatrooms with Twitch.
There becomes a point where those streamers reach a status of e-celeb that mean they are far above their large fanbase and have no connection to them but taking their money. At this point the drones have subjected themselves to so much time they believe they are close to these figures and no longer truly entertained but following, watching to feel apart of something.

Highly questionable, it just seems like he does because he does debates on his streams with his fandom cheering him on while also being able to dictate the questions and the rules of the conversation

Looking back I’ve spent more money in paying for a sub to like 4 streamers (a month here or there) than I have spent money on games outside of wow. Like less than $100 over 2.5 years, and then like 10 or so bucks making fun of Asmon when he was wiping in Nighthold and then 10 bucks cause he streamed for a longer time one day and it kept me entertained listening (not watching) to it while I driving was driving for several hours. Yeah I know donating at all, but honestly it’s likely my biggest spending point outside of food, necessities and required maintenance on stuff that breaks. Beats paying for the shit that comes on tv these days. And I just listen to the stream like an audio podcast for wow streamers.
