Which purple items are for which characters?

If you have a set and you gonna do honitsu/chanta/anything that involve honor/just riichi you should keep it.
If you have a pair just leave it there, it can be your pinfu pair/chitoi/somewhat safe tile again riichi and if you dont need it/your hand advance in someway you can just discard one, the other can be your riichi tile to bluffing your wait or something like that.

If I have a pinfu-ish hand I'd hold onto a pair of valueless winds then ditch them if I need to bail.

And then you're stuck with your last dragon in the dead wall, or even just much later in the wall and someone ends up winning before you. That, or the last one comes out immediately after you skip the first and you look like an idiot.

1. Never give your character any gifts other than the 'correct' ones. 'Correct' means the ones that give +50% extra. Cat likes cookies.
2. Find out which purple gifts are needed for the 'Bond'. They are different from your character's favorite gifts.
3. Keep those purple gifts that are required for Bond.
4. Disenchant EVERYTHING else.
5. Play a lot of games to reach lvl5 bond naturally.
6. Use the dust from disenchanting to buy purple bags and fish for the purple gifts required for your 'Bond'.

sacrifice the tenpai and don't deal in. 500 points is a lot better than getting hit by a baiman.

I've just reached Jade so not sure about it and Throne, but you definitely can't in Gold and below. If you play a lot, you'll get a shitton of dust though, and you can buy bags with that dust. Use the 'special' ones, keep the 'bond' ones, disenchant back all the rest and repeat the process.

But what's the point? You'll still have to play a lot to earn the 'bond' shit, especially the spheres. You'll need 10 wishing stones that you won't be able to get without paying USD unless you also play a lot.
The thing is, you need so much shit for 'Bond' that you will simply have to play so much that you'll get that lvl5 naturally just from playing. You actually get quite a lot of rep from games.

You need 250 dust to get 5x free monthly summons, too - those can give pretty useful stuff, but most importantly this is the only way to obtain wishing stones without paying money.

Well, that's the only way of getting purple gifts in the first place unless you're willing to pay money or wait for events. Considering that you can get like 4-5 chests per day of playing easily, and those chests often contain blue gifts that disenchant into 5 dust, sometimes even two, you can get a random purple gift every 1-2 days. What you really need is the 5 'bond' ones, they are the most important, because without them you won't get the special model, but your 'favorite' gifts aren't really that important since you'll still have to play a shitton and level naturally.

80k bond is 222 first places or 444 2nd places

Well, I'll almost to bond5 without giving anything other than the welfare console everyone got on servers launch, and how long has it been since launch... 3 weeks I think? I have ~300 games, not sure how many I've played with this character though. But it's worth noting that I got Kana really early, and this console was her +50% gift, so I got some extra 2500 easy points. I did get some soul titles early, too (getting Kana happened via the USD-purchased summons), so yeah, I kinda forgot about the +rep bonus you get from that.

I still think that it's relatively possible to get a lvl5 special model character while being completely F2P. It will take a shitton of time, though. I think even playing ~100 games per week like I do, it would've taken about ~2-3 months. But anyway, with 5% of getting a character, and only 5 free chances per month, chances are it will take several months of F2P just to get any special character at all.

Even for a pro that gets a consistent .25 ratio on every positioning, that pretty much means an average of 1300 matches always using the same character.

This would probably only happen if 4 pros of similar skill level would play thousands of games only between each other. Actual pros who play with different people of different skill, have ~30% 1sts and ~20% 4ths on average.

Most games don't even give you an option to break rules that would result in chombo.
I know the flash game "bamboo mahjong" will let you do any call at any time, which can result in chombo.
The steam game "pretty girls mahjong battle" allows you to call a concealed kan while in riichi, even if doing so would change your wait. If you do so and the match ends in exhaustive draw, you gotta pay a chombo penalty.

True, it'd be hard. Maybe if their discards are all over the place, they do a lot of tsumogiri and often discard tiles that just have been discarded. But single tile wait suuankou is rare anyway. The best way to defend would probably to attack quickly.

Teaching new players IRL seems daunting even as someone with okay knowledge of the game. Simulators help a lot with stuff like tenpai, yaku, furiten etc that I don't feel completely confident explaining to someone new despite having a fine grasp of them while playing normally.

That's not true, if I have a tanyao then I have a tanyao in my hand.
If my yaku is houtei than I don't have a yaku until I make that ron call.

It will still let you call but it wont show how many winning tiles are left or whether you're in furten or not and whethere you have yaku or not
