Why do they have to team up with? Why has Sony chosen Microsoft as partner instead of choosing Amazon or any other big tech companies having cloud service even though they are harshly competing each others in the game industry? Or, was it actually an approach from Microsoft to Sony?
We gamers™ and our goddess journalists tend to look down on game streaming service cuz of "muh latency" and there is no exception for Google's Stadia as well, but is there any actual potential to be a big threat to them even to the degree that these companies have to think they have no choice but to get help from the another to beat off Google? What will this collaboration and teaming up contribute to our gaming world?

They are no longer a Platform Holder, at least not any more than Steam is. MS is no longer a competitor and thus it's perfectly safe to cooperate with them with various services.

Sony is perfectly fine teaming up with their competition if it means finding a way to screw us over. And yes, absolutely NOTHING GOOD will come out of this, guaranteed.
Sony's investments in cloud didn't work out for gaming as it was costing too much money to establish a network for game streaming and networking at the same time while competing with other services. Amazon's offering was immature and potentially disruptive against Sony if they decided to compete and Google is now a direct competitor. It's essentially the devil they know with a mature software stack. There are a few games on PS4 that use MS Azure already like R6 Siege and PUBG so it's not new. It's probably the smartest move they could make in terms of a warning shot against Google and Amazon.

This, Sony and Microsoft have more of an interest in maintaining the status quo than they do in fighting one another. Sony is partnering with Microsoft with this specifically so they don't give another company like Amazon a path in to disrupt things.

Except you're missing the point entire point. They partner up to make it so no one disrupts the market. It benefits everyone to keep the status quo. And by everyone I mean the companies of course. They don't care about Nintendo's segment and they will never compete in it since it's a treacherous path. Why would they take unnecessary risks when you can play in the same field for limited impact but huge gains. Honestly, it's a smart move to protect both companies interests.

this seems right. if cloud streaming is the future of gaming, the winner must be the company that has the most efficient network service in the world ---- pure software based company. Sony is basically hardware company.
but I dont think it is a wrong choice for sony to choose an outside company to get help from it. rather, it will be win-win.
