Dark Samus is a hyper mutated Metroid that was exposed to a radioactive mutagen, phazon. After then merging with Samus' DNA after a fight with her, it becomes a hybrid Samus/Metroid/Phazon monstrosity that can brainwash people, control phazon itself and basically went full eldritch abomination.
It shows some degree of sentience, but never outright speaks human language I believe. It can understand how to use technology though, so it's clearly intelligent.
Under the armor it's a Metroid-like single cell creature with a human-like skeleton visible inside.

I enjoyed it a lot, I'm a big sucker for the whole "Monstrous person wants to be with the one they love but can't because of their nature" kind of story and it is 100% that in the same way Liar Princess is (which I also love). There's even a story book in Franxx that is almost word for word the story of Liar Princess. Like I was wondering if they were both based on the same thing when I played Liar Princess even.

Most of the hate comes from the ending from what I've seen and I think it's valid. Without spoiling it I felt the ending was out of tone with the rest of the series. I still enjoyed the story and main pairing a ton though so I like it.

The actual love story aspect of the show is well done, the hate comes from the fact that the plot starts to take precedence in the last few episodes, and the plot is absolutely off the rails. Couple this with the fact that the main characters get shafted from a meta perspective; i.e. despite carrying the show, the series treats their plotline in the final episode like an afterthought, it's wholelly unsatisfying. That said, I don't regret watching the show, I'm just bitter about how they fumbled it in the end.

Franxx is pretty terrible at it though. 02 is just a human who was treated as a piece of shit all her life.
Stories like that are at their best when there's at the very least a considerable species difference between the lovers like in Sengoku Youko where a human guy fell for a kitsune girl but they both were trying to hold off from true romantic involvement because their lifespans are fucking incomparable until the guy went fucking bananas and in pursuit of demonic body became a world eating demon.

She's a monster because she was treated like a monster and she acts like a monster (such as attacking the rest of the squad when they refused to let her see Hiro) because of that situation she's put in. The point is she isn't a monster and Hiro allows her to heal because he's the only one that never treated her like a monster. It's why she got sad when he was scared for a moment when she showed him her fangs.
While I do appreciate the same story concept with a genuine difference in species, I also think the concept works just fine when the "monster" aspect as a psychological thing too, it just depends on the way the work handles it either way. I think saying either is inherently better is silly.

Not really. All her unique traits only concern the robot piloting. Outside of it she is just a human girl with horns who is stronger than normal human and all her problems are psychological in nature, you could as well just make a highschool romance with delinquent girl as a female lead and nothing will really change.
And even though Hiro does turn into a klaxxosaur, it's used in the least interesting and satisfying way possible at the very end of the story before they an hero themselves. Compare it to SY where the disaster of MC's transformation becomes the catalyst for entire second half of the story.
