Those who claim the Finger Poke of Doom killed WCW have been saturated with a narrative for so long that is counter to the facts they actually believe it. FPOD killing WCW is one of biggest misconceptions that has plagued the IWC for years. It wasn't until second quarter of 99, that WCW was in full business collapse mode & never recovered.
To simple minded morons the angle was just a Finger Poke but to people who actually have product knowledge; it was also an elaborate show long storyline, the reuniting of The Outsiders, the merger of nWo B&W & nWo Wolfpac, the crowning of a new WCW World Heavyweight Champion, the heel turns of Kevin Nash & Lex Luger & one of the best professional wrestling beatdowns I have ever witnessed, in which Goldberg was beaten, handcuffed, tasered & tagged. With almost 40,000 fans in attendance at the Georgia Dome that night, the atmosphere was incredible.
While some of the following events described may not have played out, the initial intent was there & any criticism should be attributed to the booking after the FPOD not the FPOD itself. Prior to the FPOD WCW had already been losing in the ratings war against the WWF for 9 weeks. They needed to come up with something big if they were to try & claw some momentum back.
Finger Poke was honestly not as bad as literally telling everyone that WWF was about to have one of its all time best moments to inspire everyone to switch over to Raw is War and watch it happen live. Then, the viewers get invested in Foley as champion and dickhead Rock, then viewers get invested in loving Rock, then WCW's fate was sealed.
