I hope they keep the original

I want them to clean up the typos or legitimate errors and leave everything else intact, but there's no chance.

FF7’s gameplay, plot and atmosphere are severely held back by the god awful english translation. The game reads entirely differently in japanese. The only reason you didn’t care back then was because you were a kid. I hope the remake dialogue reflects the proper japanese writing.

The localization is responsible for the shit dialog, not the original script.

Got any examples that can prove this?

>being a subhuman EOP that plays Japanese games in English

Yes and no.
Optimally, someone that had a keen eye could differentiate between complete inaccuracies and English lines that had their own charm, because there were some of those.

Not likely tho.

>being a weeb in '97
Jinkies!

The game is not looking to imitate the original. Expect big deviations. It's a remake not a remaster.

I'm betting they keep some things like "Let's Mosey", but that's it.

Fortune Cookie OwO

The mere existence of the remake pisses off hardcore purists.

Not anything specific, as I haven’t played the game in a long time. But I distinctly remember going into the game with very high hopes and then being incredibly disappointed by the clearly terrible translation. There were several NPCs during the first part of the game in Midgar where I literally could not figure out what they were trying to say. I was fucking baffled that THIS was considered one of the greatest rpgs of all time when every piece of dialogue was so sloppy and confusing. I ended up dropping it at the prison camp.

Fuck you, Cloud is midwestern hick whether you like it or not.

The localization was "questionable" with plenty of typos, shit like clones being just plain incorrect and so forth. But it's also responsible for a lot of the character quirks and, well, character in general. If they just straight-up localized FF7 as the original Japanese dialogue intact, like that one fan retranslation did, the game would be absolutely dry as a bone. It was obviously FF7R's gameplay trailer back in 2015 was much more straight-laced like the Japanese dialogue would be, but then they made weird changes like that one Guard reaching out to Cloud going from possibly recognizing him to "STOP RIGHT THERE" nonsense.

The newest trailer making Barret more boisterous seems like they're taking more pages from the english characterizations, but we'll have to see.

You're in for a massive disappointment if you think they are going to recreate this game scene by scene. This is just going to be a rushed cash grab with huge portions of the game cut out.

What a big baby you are haha.

>npc dialogue is so important I can’t finish this game
Lmao imagine saying that about the original Final Fantasy

>"I don't want the remake to end as something solely nostalgic. I want to get the fans of the original version excited,"
>"We'll be making adjustments to the story with this thought in mind."
You can expect both dialog and story changes.

>story changes.

This guys are sick

Do you think they'll censor Cid being abusive to his not-wife?

The writing wasn’t the only reason I dropped it. The game was just boring and I wasn’t enjoying the combat either. Also it wasn’t just random NPC dialogue that sucked, it ALL sucked. Playing it as an adult makes it abundantly clear how shitty the translation is. And in a story-focused game, that’s pretty fucking important.

they already changed the combat who gives a shit, the remake will not be a 1:1 copy of the original no matter how desilutional you are

That was because the translation was done in like 2 weeks by 1 guy.

Most localizations back then were done in a month or less, and not even by largely staffed teams but like a handful of people, often one person. FF7 wasn't an exception, it just turned out to be relatively alright compared to titles such as Secret of Mana nuking 40% of the text because the localization team refused to change the font size, or one guy nearly being worked to death having to do Xenogears on his own.

Yeah I mean after playing it that was pretty clear. That’s why they should use the proper japanese dialogue with an actually professional translation.

I'm sure it'll keep certain fan favorites like "let's mosey", but otherwise, it'll be completely new. For one thing, I'm sure even the Japanese script will change.

> If they just straight-up localized FF7 as the original Japanese dialogue intact, like that one fan retranslation did, the game would be absolutely dry as a bone.

I don't know about that. If they gave it a straight translation maybe, but you used the word "localization", which especially these days, implies a certain level of editing of dialogue for smoother flow in the target language. Can't really judge things on fan translations. While there are some very good fan translations out there, they certainly aren't the majority. I can't comment on the fan retranslation much, but I know that a few of the early area footage I saw was pretty dry and from some other footage I saw, they missed some obvious mistakes that the official localization made too.

I respect the FF VII localization for what it is, given what the translator went through, and it does have some nice character, but viewed objectively, it is pretty bad.

this has already been patched out of all the recent versions

>born in a small as fuck town where teenage girls wear cowboy hats
>not allowed to let some slang slip through after he sorts through the trauma and mindrape, especially after hanging around with Cid and Barrett for months

The localization was shit, but that line was based

Considering the game is written in Japanese, that'll be up to the localization team, who will probably not even be aware of most of the choices the localization team for the original game made.

Theyre going to turn cloud into a dark n edgy Squall wannabe, instead of the spunky badass goofball he was in the original.

Attached: IMG_20180829_110656.jpg (1246x879, 108K)

let's mosey is iconic

>mfw finding out back then it was pretty common for translators to not even see screenshots of scenes and usually had to go off a few screenshots of random bits of the game and concept art alone.

How did anyone ever work like that?

But will they keep Yuffie's tummy

I'm playing the game for a first time using a re-translation patch, and it's pretty good so far. The dialogue is much more clean and easy to follow-along.

Attached: ff7_en_2019-05-13_22-21-28.png (1600x1024, 449K)

To be fair half of the story did have him being an angsting jackass with a rage boner for Sephiroth.

>next person at that checkout slides their fruits across the scanner that just before had dog's ass on it

There are some great localizations out there (not all of them, there's less good ones that bad ones), but I mostly play Nip games in Nip too. I started playing Parasite Eve after ignoring it for 21 years and it felt weird in Japanese at first given the setting, but I got used to it quickly, and from some English footage I checked, the translation seems kinda "eh" in places. Didn't even have the X-Files reference the Japanese version has.

Attached: Next-File.png (1359x940, 2.34M)

I never used to really think about it. Seemed fine when I played the game, and when I played it in Japanese and saw the Japanese line, it also seemed fine. It wasn't until someone mentioned that it's probably a callback to when he said the same thing after Aeris' death when making up his mind to chase down Sephiroth that I started to think differently of it. When I stop and think, he probably wouldn't be in the a mood in which he'd use something like "let's mosey" when fixing to face down a nightmare from his past and Aeris' killer.

It was the standard of the time. The infamous Ted Woolsey may be criticized by diehard faithfulness fanboys but Squaresoft repeatedly gave him tight deadlines and hellish situations to make the most of, and he did alright for most of his games. Nothing like how liberally Working Designs rewrote way too much shit in their localizations, including Lunar.

yeah he was super confused but he had a lot of personality. I'm just worried square will use the same personality Cloud had in Advent Children.

I'm just in awe of these absolute machines that localised games in the 90s. I will read ANY script Jeremy Blaustein localised.

I should give the game another shot like this honestly. As long as it’s at least a competent translation.

They're probably gonna change him to be more congruent with the expanded universe games.

Well, his arc is all about him being fucking wrong, so I imagine they won't change it. But zoomies will be shocked at first and probably write articles about it

It did, but that was only ever a part of his character and while his hatred and baggage can't be denied, it's usually nebulous as to whether he's putting up a front for himself or others. His development is unironically going from being an angsty tryhard playing pretend to an angsty top lad who enjoys the banter he made along the way to kill Sephiroth fucking shits.

Square has had success with this in the past. The Woolsey translations of FFVI and Chrono Trigger were redone for various ports over the years, but they retained all the personality and kept all the well-known lines. Square's localizations have been pretty top-notch in general since around FFXII.

Yeah, 90s video game translators dealt with some awful shit. I translate small indie games, and it's not as nice as the process probably goes for translating something for, say, Nintendo these days, but I still have it easier than they did. The internet alone really helps.

he made FF6 for me. I like his CT translation, too. The only bad part was the 'find this person - fast!' making dumbfuck kids like me scour time for someone who needed help

Yeah if you have it on PC, use the Remako mod for the translation and a couple other QoL touches.
I've been playing with the original script on my second monitor for comparison's sake, and it really is much better while still keeping the characters' personalities intact.

Attached: ff7_en_2019-05-14_21-20-48.png (1600x1024, 600K)

At least you don't have to deal with Nintendo's laundry list of "Things you must get rid of" book.

Seriously it's the 21st century and you STILL scrub references to religion? REALLY NINTENDO?

>Got any examples that can prove this?
Prove what? Besides the numerous grammar mistakes, everyone in FVII communicates in very basic English sentences. Despite being a group of misfits, some of which aren't even human, all of the characters have very nondistinct and same-y styles of speech (besides Barret's Mr T impression, which is another mistranslation and butchering of his character). Since there's also a weird lack of voice acting (not even grunting noises for taking damage), characters don't feel like particularly distinct individuals.

Do you seriously think FF7's script holds up compared to other story-driven rpgs?

Attached: 12388128123.jpg (201x201, 5K)

Where the FUCK is my tea?

I just wish there were model replacement mods that didn't clash with basically fucking everything or turn the cast into horrific "HD" abominations.

youtube.com/watch?v=ZefYEaNUJ7w&list=PLsiJPoHlPqEEA07AKMQ2Hm2oRLiGkR_uJ&index=3&t=0s

The ONLY story change I'd be happy with is if Cait Sith stays "dead" after the Temple of Ancients up until the Junon escape, where he suddenly comes back with a cool new ride and a Level 3 Limit Break. And give Vincent something to do in the plot, for fuck sake.

I find the models much more bearable than the original localization

You think they'll include the dating background code that effects how close you are to each character?

I think that's mostly the fault of the localizers. The Treehouse localizers just did whatever they wanted, they haven't seemed to be so bad lately. I haven't played a lot of Nintendo games recently, but what I have was better. At first I thought they tried to scrub religious stuff from BOTW since they renamed the "Devil Statue" to the "Dealer" in English, but then they mention gods several times too, so I think it was just an odd decision. They did scrub all references to body weight from the game though.

>Got any examples that can prove this?
Almost all the old FF translations butchered the script. For example:

kotaku.com/5904666/a-single-mistranslation-changed-one-final-fantasy-characters-entire-motivation

>Avid Final Fantasy VI fans might have noticed an inconsistency among the various releases of Square Enix's classic role-playing game.
>While joining your ragtag group of Empire-fighting rebels in the 1994 Super Nintendo version, wandering gambler Setzer says, "The Empire's made me a rich man." As if he's sacrificing money to do the right thing.
>But in the Game Boy Advance version, released over a decade later, he says, "The Empire's been bad for business." As if he's joining your team because it'll make him more dough.
>Seems like a huge discrepancy, no? In one version, Setzer is a noble rogue; in another, he's just fighting to turn a profit. Well according to GBA translator Tom Slattery, the original, nobler version was a mistranslation.

Attached: 1848215772.png (110x128, 24K)

I can't really disagree without just saying NO U, but muh personal interpretation of his character was that he'd made peace with his past and Aeris' death, he was going to fuck up Sephiroth mostly to save the future, not avenge the past, so dropping his coldsteel persona due to a combination of comfort around his frens and resigned determination seemed reasonable 5me

Attached: 1557747315367.png (1920x1080, 1.05M)

>all of the characters have very nondistinct and same-y styles of speech

This isn't entirely related, but it did reminded me of FF IX's Japanese script. They really did a good job giving characters a voice, even the minor ones. It was always easy to tell who was talking even if they were off screen.

The models don't bother me as much as the low-res backgrounds. I thought that the FFIX port touching up the models made it end up looking worse.

>It was the standard of the time. The infamous Ted Woolsey may be criticized by diehard faithfulness fanboys but Squaresoft repeatedly gave him tight deadlines and hellish situations to make the most of, and he did alright for most of his games.

>did alright
Wrong, as evidenced by:

Attached: 13761383012.jpg (540x540, 26K)

By "did alright", my standard will always be "it's not Breath of Fire II"

Really? I think the backgrounds are beautiful and hold up better than anything else in the game.

I'm pretty sure they just have a list of stuff they have to sterilise, and references to Christianity is one of them.

With 90s deadlines there was no way in hell he isn't going to make a few mistakes.

god why'd they make the canon prostitute such a semen slurper

W-will she appear in the Remake bros?

Autism: the post

Yeah, and so will Genesis

Again, a lot of this was on short time frames, and often with poor context and sometimes misinterpreting text altogether. The 90's were hell for localization, on a different level from today's attempts at censoring things. FF5's PS1 localization turning Faris into a pirate all game long instead of just until she leaves them, and the infamous Y BURN shit, stand out the best because that game was probably one of the worst Square localizations.

It really is understated how much the GBA versions improve a lot of the writing, but then people will forever criticize the DS version of Chrono Trigger for changing how Frog talks.

Not sure, I haven't played anything with references to Christianity on a Nintendo system in a while. I know people talked about religious censorship in Xenoblade 2, but I can't tell if that was Nintendo or the localizer's fault. From what I've seen of that game's localization, it's pretty "eh", so it wouldn't surprise me if it was just the localizers doing their own thing. Like, people thing that NoA must scrub sexual stuff out of games, and I know Xenoblade 2 toned some of that down, but they actually added sexual jokes to BOTW where there were none in the Nip version. At the end of the day though, it's just a bit of a crapshoot what you're gonna get with any given localization, there are so many things that can fuck them up from company policies, to power tripping translators or localizers, or plain unskilled translators.

He hasn’t had much dialogue from either trailer so far but he doesn’t really give off that impression so far.

The GBA version really improved on the PSX localization for FF V, but then it got VERY liberal too. Like, you know how Ghido always insults Bartz's intelligence in the GBA version? Completely made up, in Japanese Ghido was a fairly generic old sage who guided them. There was still plenty of humor in the Japanese script, the English version just added a lot more.

That seemed to be a recurring problem on PS1 JRPGs, what with Sony having virtually no quality control, so as not to piss off third parties like Nintendo did.

Nintendo of Europe were actually the ones behind XC2's localization.

Sexualization in Nintendo games seems to have stepped up quite a bit since Iwata died and what's-his-name took over. Look at Super Mario Odyssey with Pauline (I think that's her name), and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Zero-Suit Samus was around beforehand, but Metroid games have been few and far between.

The 2015 already proved you wrong. Why do retards keep spewing bullshit without any kind of proof?

That might have to do with getting Nintendo Treehouse to royally fuck off after so much backlash, at least for now. Treehouse were the ones that were rewriting Fire Emblem Fates liberally to both tone down the sexual/fanservice content and also change countless support conversations for seemingly no reason at all, as well as censor Xenoblade Chronicles X and even censor #FE to the point that they got Atlus to revoice an entire scene for the altered context.

Everyone's all excited for seeing their favorite characters remade, I'm just excited to actually be able to see where the fuck I'm going.

so the yuros were the one who thought that penis joke was funny?

unless you really like the welsh nia and the hammy ass zeke, the whole localization was basically a wash. but they didn't change scenes, so there was probably a penis or shit joke in the original japanese or something

Unironically supposed to be the last 'Aryan' in the world.

Oh right, I forgot about that. But I do remember being surprised at some of the stuff they did with the localization.

I still can't believe they got the voice actors to revoice scenes. I mean, it's not like the majority of English speakers were ever notice that the dialogue and text don't match up.

What the fuck wrong pic that's my cousin

>adjustments to the story
Oh, boy.
Inb4 Aeri-tity lives and Sephiroth gets Ardyn'd in villain department.

Attached: 155402371265320.png (512x512, 503K)

>but they didn't change scenes

They did. I won't mention the ones that always get brought up, but they changed a couple of lines in the sleepwalking scene.

English:

Gramps: She's certainly exposing an awful lot of skin.
Dromarch: Pot, meet kettle.
Gramps: Would you care to explain what that is supposed to mean, my good sir?
Dromarch: Have you looked in a mirror recently?

Japanese:

Gramps: Well, when you show that that much skin, one can't really help themselves...
Dromarch: Agreed.
Gramps: Couldn't she cover up a bit more?
Dromarch: I quite like her as she is

I've also heard that they changed some other random stuff. The penis joke was in Japanese though, it was just different. That was actually a good translation.

I just finished the game for the first time and half the time the dialogue vaguely makes sense and it's always choppy. Try replaying the game and you'll see how bad it is.

I meant they didn't outright change scenes ala #FE, not "didn't change context", so Mythra blushing to the joke was always there.

You have some interesting photos of your cousins.

Bro, give me your cousin's insta then holy fuck

Ah okay. Misinterpreted what you meant, sorry about that.

How do fuck do you Ardyn Sephiroth?

People are seriously exaggerating Cloud's emo phase in Advent Children. At the beginning of the game he has his "Not interested" persona for Rufus and the Turks, his first line even being "Do I feel sorry for you" in a smug manner to Rude in regards to Rufus being alive. He's at his lowest when in the City of the Ancients and Tifa's room, and right after his talk with Vincent when 45% of the movie is still left he becomes old confident Cloud again.

Just started playing for the first time, any tips I should know going in?

and no I'm not underage, I'm 28,just never got a chance to play the game

Don't underestimate the usefulness of the Enemy Skill materia.

Pay attention to the fact that magic and summon materia reduces max HP.

Magic defense does nothing if you're playing the PSX version, otherwise it actually works.

>DEEPGROUND is a thing that totally existed all along guys!

Been playing it in nip recently and the translation is like night and day. It really is better in nip.

Tbqh I blame the nip voice actor (translator's note: voice actor means seiyuuuu), his delivery was flat, so even though the script (slightly) transitioned into chadCloud, the way he talked made it seem like he went from mopey robot to stoic robot.

Ever since learning Japanese, I really can't play Final Fantasy in English anymore. For the most part. I played a bit of XII and kept wanting to switch to English because I like the localization, but the fact that that game bores me might've been part of it too, I didn't get past Bhujerba in my attempted Japanese playthrough.

Ah so you are just trolling then.

When you get the submarine go to the Sunken Galinka

Huh? Not even that guy, but are you denying that FF VII's English script isn't a mess? I knew that even before I ever played the Japanese version.

Yep the dialog really just feels more natural and paces the story in a better way the english translations fail to hit.

What did that guy say that makes you think he’s trolling? He’s correct on every point.

It's literally the same argument some butthurt wrpgfaggot keeps spamming.

Not sure if it's copypasta or not, but it's not wrong.

I knew something was up when they started showing Peach with cleavage.

Peach showed her cleavage? I don't remember this for some reason.
