You have to adopt them younger to get their affection, they are lap cats because they feel comfortable sitting on you, they get this behavior through their first year as they think you are their mother and will relentlesly look for you to sleep feeling safe by your side.
At 8yo she is like 35+ human years, but rest easy, at least if she is still active it means she isn't depressed.
