Nowadays there aren't any public forums anymore, people would rather just make a Discord and have people join that. You can't just poke your head in anymore to find out something you want to know. You need to join their server, notify everyone, and then dig through chat logs.

for mmos people stop talking in guild chat and start talking in discord chat exclusively. you have to alt tab every time you want to type something. its really annoying. id prefer if all chat stayed ingame unless you are doing some content that needs voice chat.
it also changes the guild social scene from "whenever im ingame i can talk to these people" to "im expected to talk to these people at all times". thats not really that big of a deal if you are in a guild made out of all of your best buds, but its annoying when you join a guild of strangers to raid with and then expect you to talk to them 24/7, even when you have no interest in playing the game.

It doesn’t ruin close circles of friends, but it sure as fuck has a nasty habit of bringing up all sorts of annoying behavior in larger communities. Clique-izing, attention seeking, those fucktards who want to share their fap material with others, pointless drama, it’s a perfect platform for all that due to low posting treshold.

Discord gives autists a great platform to be mega autists on but that's not like it is the fault of Discord. Those people find ways to do that regardless.
They'll be the ones with 400,000 forum posts, or constantly finding any avenue of game discussion across Reddit/GameFAQ/Fansites/Official Forums and demand that their opinion be heard. They'll afk in capital cities and discuss all day in a relevant chat if that system is available.
I think it's really cool to be able to have Discords that include development team members and you get faster feedback and better communication between the developers and the consumers but there are people who are always going to ruin this shit by demanding an audience.

Mumble is shit and Teamspeak servers cost money. Teamspeak's main use and appeal is in being able to have a few hundred people on voice comms, useful in games like Eve Online where you'll have your 2000 man guild split up into 250 man fleets each in their own TS channel.

Communication platforms with low treshold for posting combined with popularity and nicknames is a combination that brings out the worst of any community. At least forums have a slower pace of posting and less tolerance for spammy shit, but Discord’s style of discussion just gives retards a perfect place to ruin communities.

Obviously it’s not the tool itself that ruins communities, but it’s just that some platforms are more prone to breeding annoying behavior by attracting more idiots and giving them a chance to ”shine”.

Last year I saw a few (oldish) youtube videos about FF4 Free Enterprise and struggled to find anything current about the hack/game other than the website itself. Turns out everything (help documents, schedules, etc.) is on discord exclusively (and twitch if you know who to follow).

mostly that's because the in-game voice options are usually ass, plus if you disconnect from the game or your game crashes then your voice stops working.

I think the shift to documenting things exclsively through Discord is a mistake and is 100 times more inefficient then a forum post. For anyone who plays fighting games, you'll have noticed the shift from a big post detailing all of X characters combos to finding stuff kinda spread out through chat logs.

You just made me realize something actually: Where is all this info getting saved? Forum posts stay around for years and threads can appear on search engines, but discord messages are both locked away and become extremely difficult to find if you have to rely on Discord's in-built search. Hell, just the fact that you can't differentiate between a thread title and a reply means you end up with a ton of one-off mentions in other conversations that clog the results. Not to mention, a lot of people on Discord use google documents for sharing, which are not only not hosted on their own site (for a txt file of all things), but don't show up in search results either.

What I'm getting at is, there will probably be a large information gap in the coming years as the internet switches away from traditional formats towards those owned by corporations - especially shady ones like Discord which use the hip and friendly "Submit your memes and we'll put them on loading screens!" veneer to hide the fact that they're one of the most dystopian entities yet, monitoring all their sub-channels like some shadowy overlord while you toss away all those freedoms you took for granted. It isn't an entirely original thought - user mentioned this when Stadia was making news and foresaw us losing things that way - but it does go deeper than that.

Previously people on your server would use part of the chat system, forming channels for calling out when these monsters were found so people that wanted to could gather up and fight them for the rewards. Between in game changes and Discord's popularity, now hunts seem to managed entirely through a discord server. Don't wanna join that? Too bad, hope you're in a zone where people are getting ready, instead of using the nice convenient in game chat system designed to say things to people regardless of what part of the world they're in. It might just be the server I'm on now, but it fucking sucks since hunts were such a nice system before.

My problem with Discord is that if one single company goes down, ALL shit currently hosted/shared/stored on discord channels is waving you goodbye. If they make a turn and decide to do tumblr and start pogroms of nsfw channels, there's no stopping them. It's centralized system, which brings it's pros and cons.
Sure, any forum can go down too, or admin can have a fallout, but then you only lose one HouseofThisSingleCoolGame.com, not every other site in tow with it. Same applies to anything cloud, honestly, it's just way too much power in just a few hands.
Plus, Discord is chatting application. Chat is smalltalk, just a sentence or two, something you blurt out quickly and slam enter to send. Forums usually feel more "serious" - you are writing a post, not a message. Maybe it's just me, but I approach this sort of writing differently from chat application I personally use. And, of course, can't forget that forum is a site that opens on any browser that's not shite, and I bet even in discord age there are shitloads of situations when you have to keep 4-6 different applications to keep contacts with everyone.

Internet centralization has been a discussion on my mind a lot lately and is a topic I've been wanting to research for a while now.

In my experience Discord sucks because it took the interactions and communities that were specific to each game and moved them somewhere outside of that game's space.
In the past when it came to MMOs for example a lot of communication would happen in-game because at the time of early MMOs the only alternatives were online forums or e-mail.
Games would have their private in-game chat system where you could have the option of directly messaging other players, talking on a global or local in-game channel, or talking to your clan/party.
Keeping these interactions in-game promoted community building in the game and helped to make MMOs and early multi player game communities feel more lively and close knit.
It was way easier to make friends with people through games like this, or even just have a random chat with strangers you encountered in lobbies or virtual spaces.
Discord isn't really the first service to popularize this trend though, you can thank skype for that.

Side note: VR Chat is an interesting modern example of bringing this kind of interaction system back even if it's plagued by a lot of the old problems that came with such systems + modern BS.

tl;dr Discord and skype killed in-game communities by adding to the problem of internet centralization.

On the bright side people are starting to realize the consequences of internet centralization and I think the next decade will see some evolution, or return to some of the older ways we used to structure the internet
