not to mention paper mario can travel through dimensions (not to mention 64 mario can travel between parallel universes), drybones mario can turn invincible whenever he wants, and odyssey mario can take control of literally anything not wearing a hat

Nah. Big fan of both but Mario has no answer for Sonic's natural abilities, while Sonic can just lame out pretty much every worthwhile Mario power up since the ones that are actually a threat to him have some sort of time limit (either a literal one or in the fact that they only last a single level.)
Mario's only major advantage is his strength advantage but Sonic is no slouch in that department either.
Mario's best shot is if we treat him as a composite character and give him access to Paper Mario exclusive things, but even then we'd have to count Archie Sonic to be fair and Archie Sonic pulls some stupid shit in his own right.
