It doesn't do anything new and the shade mechanic can be very bothersome but I still think it's the best Metroidvania I've played. However I haven't played any Igavania besides SotN. Basically every path to progression in HK has some kind of tell without holding your hand too much. The massive map means that you're always progressing towards something and the roadblocks are pretty clear. Also every Metroidvania needs map markers, and a lot of them.
The shade thing is the only aspect that harms exploration for me. You can wander just a little too far, realize you're going in the wrong direction, then die and have to backtrack to a roadblock you've already taken note of. Yes there's an NPC to help with this but it's not a perfect solution.

I agree with most of this list. Aquaria is great tier in my opinion, La Mulana 2 might as well but I was too disappointed with this game.

you're still early-midgame
after you beat soul master the map opens up quite a bit and you can go around and collect a bunch of masks, there are 4 total life upgrades plus charms that further improve your max health
