Why did it fail?
Why did it fail?
games that Yea Forums likes are doomed to fail
low key I thought this was a remake of that 2006 game
It was too hard.
Shit game hoping to ride on the brand recognition of a game that most people didn't play.
Its better than you make it out to be, not truly a Prey 2, more like Dishonored in Outer Space, but hey, it did better than Rage 2.
Shit marketing, pretty much the same reason that anything published by bethesda that isnt TES or Fallout fails.
>it was all a dream
Thats why. garbage ending kills any reason to play the game after youve beaten it.
>more like Dishonored in Outer Space
You mean System Shock?
Failed at the normie crowd because it was not a generic fps like battlefield or cod.
Failed at gaymers because the weapons were strange and enemies not really fun.
Objectively a high quality game everyone should try.
On what metric did it fail just out of curiosity? Sales? It was a fucking great game
its simply a mediocre game
what did Yea Forums mean by this
As far as sales are concerned, it bombed. The president at Arkane, who had founded the company, also retired after its release.
thats actually a shame. I really enjoyed prey and was hoping for a sequel
Normalfags can't handle real games. Also this
Yeah, it's too bad. It was a fantastic game. Pretty much all of Arkane's stuff is good.
No.
It was fun rolling around as random objects. Being an Operator was great. Get to fly around and use fire.
Dunno but I had it on my backlog and played it the other week. I havent finished it yet but I got pretty close. It's almost like there is too much shit to do. There's not, because it's not that repetitive or annoying. Theres just a good quantity of stuff. Really good game though, and could be my 2017 goty if Slay the Spire wasnt already.
Bad marketing.
It failed because prey 2 fags were also it’s primary market but they were too buttblasted over a name to buy it
brainlet
It didn't.
He left because Bethesda fucked them over with no marketing and no support for their next game which was salvaged into the moon crash DLC
They then tried to copy prop Hunt with Typhon hunter, that failed.
That's so weird, because everything I heard about it at the time was praise. Why did it bomb so bad when everyone loved it? DOOM did well, right? Feels like a similar situation, well-received reboot of a classic game
It was well received, but that doesn't always translate to good sales. See: Everything Looking Glass Studios did. Pic related is a GOAT tier game, but it also killed the company.
yeah that's fair, I have heard of other situations like that as well, but Prey seemed pretty high profile and known-of which you'd think would pair well with good reviews
>Prey seemed pretty high profile
It had no marketing for it and it was bearing the IP of a forgotten 2006 FPS. There was also the IGN debacle, where they gave it a 4/10 because the reviewer experienced a game breaking bug.
Did it fail? I heard almost nothing but good things about it other than the ending being dumb
I mean he’s not far off, all they needed was one of two fmv scenes after it for some closure
piss off fag
It was literally an "It was all a dream" ending in its purest, the most stupid form.
Such a garbage ending for an otherwise sweet game.
>next game which was salvaged into the moon crash DLC
really?
Wasn't it based on events that actually happened, though?
good game, mooncrash is good.
prey's problem was that in the second half of the game, you are very powerful and the enemies respawn in small numbers so you just blast through them as you backtrack to do side missions. This gets boring. Some of the enemies, like the cystoids, look really janky for such a recent game, They should have had some really badass enemies in the second half but I guess they ran outta time.
There was a problem with the console release. playing the game with a controller was difficult. It was really designed for a PC since system shock was a PC game and it's basically exactly like system shock 2.
Play on Nightmare.
>brand recognition
>of a no-name series
It's not even a reboot, it just has the same name.
As for why it bombed, it probably has to do with the fact that the game requires you to be careful. It's not like Dishonored where most of the challenge is self-imposed, in Prey if you commit too hard to a certain playstyle with the neuromods the enemies might start becoming really obnoxious to handle.
Some reviewers like Jim Sterling complained that you can fuck yourself over that way and basically have to start over, I guess that's what turned some people away from it.
>promised a open world alien bounty hunting game featuring native americans and spiritual stuff you know like the fucking original
>released as Generic FPS #1442
Thats why
>a shotgun, a pistol
>and a bunch of gimmick guns
Prey2fags don't actually exist and even if they did, they weren't the target audience since these are two completely different games.
It was a dream, moron. It was a simulation based on real events from Morgan's memories. The entire point of the game was about teaching the Typhoon empathy, the twist being that you, the player, was the guinea pig. Literally every single action you made was important to the overall plot.
This.
I tried it but couldnt really get into it. Got to some part where a bunch of people told me to get sentry guns, i repaired and brought them 3 but that apparently was not okay and i just quit because i didnt know what else i could do.
Prey 2 had no Native American stuff and was more of a generic shooter than Prey 2017, which is an immersive sim.
>filtered by a square on the ground
I just started playing it 3 days ago and I love it.
mooncrash is very good don't forget to play that too.
>Prey
>generic fps
I bet you think Metroid Prime is a Doom clone.
Arkhane games are never really great, they're just okay attempts at making Looking Glass Studio tier games, but they either lack the talent or something else to make games as good as LGS ones.
So they may want to bear the immersive sim or stealth game flag, but they don't have the talent to do it.
>20 GB
Loved it just for that, publishers these days seem afraid to order a game that takes up less than 50 GB.
Arkane has never made a game that wasn't at least an 8/10.
Dishonored 2 was a 7/10, t b h. I couldn't even run it on launch.
Then what’s this They were targeted because it’s a niche genre and it’s great but like I said they were angry over a name
'They' consisted of shitposters who were just jumping on the next sihtposting bandwagon.
It's a crime this game did so poorly given how much people fellate system shock 2. Sure it's not as good as system shock 2 but it's a better shock game than any of the bioshocks ever were. It's a game that constantly rewards a player using their noggin, whether that be figuring out an alternate solution to gameplay problems or reading between the lines of the story. None of the conclusions you come to in either area are as deep as they could be all the time, but there is almost always more than one way to tackle a problem which is really neat.
YouTube 'let's plays' let people 'play' the game without buying it.
Bethesda should ban unauthorized let's plays of their single player story driven games, at the very least, to boost sales.
They could also monetize let's plays and work out revenue sharing deals with players. Let's plays could find a home in a Netflix like video service. Maybe allow people who own the game to watch let's plays with commercials, for example. and a premium membership wouldn't have commercials.
>Sure it's not as good as system shock 2
It's better.
what kind of shit bait is this...publishers already claim ownership of gaming videos the same way record labels do with music.
youtube has been fucking garbage since they sold out to goyggle.
Perhaps because SS2 was better than Prey by a huge deal, while the newer game is a bunch of hacks trying to copy it with gimmicks such as this honestly the game isn't very impressive. Sorry to rain on the parade of the arkhane fans but Prey was not the second coming. Either way it's also a niche genre.
Prey is better than SS2 in pretty much every single way.
It was boring.
Nope, not at all. The fact its arsenal is laughable compared to SS1 and 2 which are 30 years old by now only makes it worse.
Games like prey need to be repayable to really monetize them well. Otherwise, how are the publishers going to sell them more dlc?
Prey is a one and done kind of game for most people. Linear story driven immersive games really aren't suited for AAA investment.
Prey 3 should be more random with crazy weapons and gear that are only unlocked after lots of grinding in a difficult hazard filled sci fi environment. This will give people a reason to play the game for years.
Instead of having an open skill tree, make characters unlockable with grinding challenges or with micro-transactions. This can fund the development of new skills, powers, levels, and characters for people to buy and grind for.
the game has fun mechanics. what isn't fun though, is fighting ink blots for 8 hours. it could have been so much better if it had a better atmosphere and scarier enemies.
The vast majority of SS2's weapons are useless.
The state of Dishonored 2 and the announcement that they would again be shifting engines, this time to Cryengine of all things killed all the trust and good faith Arkane built with the first Dishonored.
A shame too, since they managed to deliver in spades with Prey, it was one of the best PC ports of 2017.
>Prey
>Linear
Weak bait.
Yes, yes it is, including the arsenal. The only interesting guns in 2 were all garbage and worse than your generic pistol/shotgun/machine gun. The Gloo Cannon alone beats anything in both games.
[citation needed]
Same as Prey, with the added downside of having every 'spell' be wprthless as well. Literally no reason whatsoever not to build your character slotting every upgrade into the 'normal' tree thanks to how absurd the shotgun/stungun were.
For starters, the balancing is very poor with ammo for most higher end weapons not being available to the player until the very end of the game and the M22 outclasses every gun by quite a bit.
it is linear and I am serious.
prey is a good game but they aren't properly unlocking the value in it with the game design.
imagine if they had an unlockable space ship in the game that you could buy for 'cyber-gems' if you were lazy. I mean how difficult is it to build a little space ship? maybe .001% of people buy it with real money and you've made some good money there.
>not using glue or abilites to lock enemies down and then beat them to death with the wrench
Every single weapon, or tool as they're more akin to, is useful both in combat and exploration.
The same can be said for Prey though. The goo gun took too long to freeze enemies, the laser ate up too much ammo to use it often, and I don't even recall the last non conventional weapon. On the other hand the shotgun could one-shot basic enemies, pistol ammo was everywhere and fairly powerful when upgraded and the stungun flatout breaks certain encounters.
what about Prey where the shotgun is all you need, but then the game has like 5 fucking weapons anyway
bethesda has horrible marketing and normies don't buy new ips unless console exclusive(yes i am aware prey exosted before but it was a different game)
Video game sales are in a horrible state, it's why both sony and microsoft now allow pc versions of their exclusives, just to make sure it gets sold enough.
>Feels like a similar situation, well-received reboot of a classic game
The original Prey was not only absolutely fucking dogshit, literally no one cared about it and the only reason people talked about it is because this Prey came out.
Git gud.
No enemy variety.
>The original Prey was not only absolutely fucking dogshit
Enemies in SS2 are a lot better as well as are the characters and atmosphere
God I love Yea Forums. I swear if this board made it its goal to actually go outside and defend the homeless, poor and people NO ONE ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT this board could actually change the world.
>atmosphere
Wrong. Prey has god tier atmosphere.
>take longer than all other weapons to kill enemies
>thinks he's smart
Where do you use the laser gun as an exploration item? The goo gun is worthless even upgraded so I'd hesitate to call it a combat weapon past the intro, and the pistol/shotgun/stungun aren't used as a tool IIRC.
>Then what’s this
A pathetic forever virgin neckbeard. Wow that was hard, are you really so retarded you couldn't figure that out?
But we don't like that game
>The goo gun is worthless even upgraded
>Nope, not at all
It makes me sad that people that should be in nursing homes are allowed to completely make an ass out of themselves on the internet.
Are you saying it's better to spend 1-3 seconds freezing an enemy when you can one-shot them with the shotgun? Or taze them in less then a second? Or snipe them from across the map in the same amount of time? It's a bad weapon that requires every upgrade into a useless tree to be used
Poor marketing all-around, from the title and confusion regarding the original Prey and its cancelled sequel to nobody knowing what Prey was going to play like up to release. All they had to do was come out and say "we made a spiritual sequel to system shock and bioshock" to get everyone excited, yet they failed at that completely.
Funny that you post that area, because both SS games had that herbarium area that Prey also has, where's the originality of it? The enemies themselves being some black goo mess are also generic. If anything Prey was quite the run of the mill space setting. It has some nice ideas but its space station was very familiar already to people who played other games of its genre.
As expected. You retards make me jolly.
>Gloo gun
>Weapon
Is the word "gun" causing your brain to malfunction mate? Its not a weapon.
>arkane cucks
The ending to this game and Danganronpa V3 are my benchmarks to out brainlets.
Emily is pretty sure, so I don't mind.
I'd argue it's a weapon but it is also a utility tool.
pretty cute*
I swear the entire controversy over "It's not like the original Prey" is a fabrication on Yea Forums.
The original game was a bargain bin shooter with some interesting mechanics that everyone forgot a week later and while it's sad Prey 2 got canned that has absolutely nothing to do with Arkane's Prey and says more about Bethesda/Zenimax. People who think we would've gotten one or the other are absolute retards.
jesus what a ugly fucking face
>Old game good
>New game bad
>It has some nice ideas but its space station was very familiar already to people who played other games of its genre.
Nothing wrong with that. We hadn't had a System Shock game this millennium and seeing all of that in HD was refreshing enough.
That's correct.
>pretty faces
>in dishonored
eh no, emily is ok
OG Prey was god tier.
SS2 absolutely has a better atmosphere. Much of it is due to the phenomenal sound design, but each area mostly feels unique and has its own personality.
That was his entire point you absolute fucking retard
not even asking for pretty at this point
just something that doesn't resemble a vampire feminist nazi hybrid werewolf beast monster
It was literally just a basic FPS with a fun death mechanic.
Literally nobody said that before Arkane's Prey was announced.
Prey was just Doom 3 clone. Better than Doom 3, sure, but other than its gravity/portals it wasn't anything special.
But you* don't like that game
there, fixed
Except the reason Prey bombed was because it wasn't Prey 2, which is what fans wanted.
Most people didn’t even know what prey 2 was.
I pity those who made the game worse for themselfs by not using typhon powers.
>But muh humanity
You didn't lose any humanity. A turret doesn't decide what a human is.
You were never even humans to begin with
>Prey 2
>what fans wanted
All 5 of them
Should I pirate this game? Or does Arkane deserve my money?
closest we have come to system shock 2 since system shock 2
i want a sequel and fuck the people who didn't buy it
>Prey bombed was because it wasn't Prey 2, which is what fans wanted.
It was too smart for gamers.
Keep telling yourselves that.
Arkane is one of the last devs still around that deserve support.
It was mediocre and had poor marketing.
Do what ever you want lad. It's worth playing in my opinion but I have no clue what you define as a company that deserves money.
MY fucking sides
Damn you Zoomers are funny
The latter. Arkane are good devs.
>3 youtube comments with 300 upvotes (which were all the same people anyways)
Arkane Prey is similair to Bioshock and that game is WAY more populair than the original Prey.
Not being a generic shooter is the reason why Arkane Prey didn't completely bomb.
Examples of companies that don't deserve anyone's money:
EA
Ubisoft
Rockstar
Bethesda
are you joking? you can become ridiculously overpowered with typhon powers
>"It's just a few people!"
Prey 2 was easily one of the most anticipated games.
Yeah but why? Lootboxes and disgusting DLC? Than I'd say Arkane deserves your money. Prey's got 1 DLC and it's something unique that is worth the time if you liked the main game.
Prey did get punished by Bethesda though.
Memespouting fags like you are so dumb you don't even get my point, games that just re-skin what was done before target nostalgic people your meme makes fun off.
You cannot seriously think that YouTube comments on videos about the topic are proof?
the point is that it's actually a subversion of the "it was all a dream" ending because it actually had a good reason to be a dream and your actions in the dream still had very real consequences, you are indeed a brainlet if you literally can't even understand prey's ending. the game has a lot of shitty aspects but the ending it's one of them, stop parroting dumb shit
Dishonored's art style is disgusting, the whole thing where models have hands bigger than their hands looks so ugly. So many people in Dishonored look like mini Mister Hyde
Of course it is. The first Prey amassed a cult following and dedicated fanbase that was very disappointed that Prey 2, which would've been amazing, was cancelled. People voted with their wallets and nu-Prey flopped.
I think the single biggest reason for its failure was the name. Tying it to some mediocre FPS that nobody gave a shit about was a super easy way to make people who'd normally like games like these ignore it completely. They should have instead called it "______ Shock" so that everyone understands that it's a System Shock/Bioshock clone.
emily is fine though, it makes sense to have the sequel be about her, if anything they shouldn't have bothered with the corvo option because it feels tacked on. I read somewhere that they were going to have her wear corvo's mask too if you choose her, which was cool, wonder why they scrapped that. the turtleneck thing is just gay
>some mediocre FPS that nobody gave a shit about
Why are people still spreading this false narrative?
>Cult following
I want actual numbers here buddy? How many people would have bought prey 2 instead of Arkane Prey?
How many Bioshock, Systemsock and immersive sim fans would you lose by making a sequel to a boring ass shooter?
Why the fuck did controller support for this break? I finally bought the PC version and apparently all controller support work through mods.
Buddy your doom 3 clone sucked. Stop thinking your circle of fans are a demographic.
>Playing an FPS on a controller when you can play with a mouse.
You like controller aim?
Given the sales figures of Prey, I'd imagine quite a bit more.
Dude Prey (2006) sold like 500 copies. No one gives a shit about it.
Rig is set up onto the TV in my apartments living room. The room looks much nicer without a tray with a keyboard and mouse next to the couch. I just want to sit back and relax.
