Mania is fine, though I guess you need to bait a bit to get a thread started without GARUGAMESH.
The inspiration is very apparent from how stages are laid out. Also Carol rolls in to a ball and handles similarly to Sonic 1. She doesn't have access to easy boosting without her bike. Funnily enough she's my favorite to play exactly for that reason.

Christian Whitehead didn't make Sonic Worlds to my understanding. Freedom Planet runs on that engine, which is the same engine used for Sonic ATS/BTS.
Christian Whitehead is doing the engine for Freedom Planet 2 though, which is what I think you're referring to.

The game does have mechanics of it's own, but it's apparent how much of a love letter to Genesis action game it is, Sonic included.

Freedom Planet does what Sonic couldn't do, make a skilled platformer and up the difficulty on boss fights so momentum and speed has to be managed with a dedicated attack button.
I enjoyed this more than Mania plus by far.

Freedom Planet was amazing. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Hell, I enjoyed Spark the Electric Jester more than most of the recent Sonic games and I fucking hate the protagonist. Annoying little bug(?) cunt. It played more like Kirby than Sonic due to the powerup system. Have yet to take the 3D sequel's demo for a spin but even that looks surprisingly well done.
