What are some bad games that made a good decision that was never repeated?
Dark Souls 2 is probably my favorite example where it introduced bonfire ascetics which were never included in From's other games like DS3, BB, Sekiro etc for no reason. Always pisses me off whenever I think about it because I'd love to be able to refight bosses whenever I wanted

The parkour in AC: Unity.
Its the best of the series
dark souls 1 stopped you from teleporting until the halfway point and allowed you to level/upgrade at bonfires. shitty game, but it would have been nice in the later/better games

Bonfire ascetics not being in 3 is so fucking criminal. Honestly, Souls games need just a fucking boss rush mode. Some stupid lore reason being "HURR THIS DOOR WILL LEAD YOU TO FACE POWERUL FOES FROM YOUR PAST TIME CONVOLUTED"
I am a big fan of monster hunter world and when I heard tri had underwater combat I wanted to see what it was like. The game was shit compared to world but underwater was amazing. I hope they add it at some point.
i'm so mad powerstancing and all the good PVP introductions of DS2 were totally canned for DS3. they really just took the worst parts of PVP from each previous game and then made the result even worse. DS2 had so many good covenants and interactions even disregarding the actual gameplay in PVP, all wasted for DS3.
Was invading in ds2 fun? I've barely invaded in that game because red eye farming and I got sotfs pretty late.
>Dark Souls 2 is probably my favorite example where it introduced bonfire ascetics which were never included in From's other games like DS3, BB, Sekiro etc for no reason
But why though? What's so special about them to you?
Because sometimes I feel like fighting certain bosses or trying different weapons on them. If I want to fight Gehrman or the Orphan (which I do because they're some of the most fun imo) I have to start a whole new game (or NG+) and to get to them I have to fight a shitload of other bosses which is one thing but I also have to get all the way through all the levels and whatever that entails each and every time
If I could just get an item (even if I had to farm it) that I could use to be able to fight one again instantly I would be going back to the game constantly rather than rarely like I do now
What the other user said plus it allows you to get certain items earlier or more than one boss soul so you can get all of their gear if you'd like to use it all. Plus it makes areas harder, an optional difficulty spike, which is nice for replaying the game. That on top of covenant of champions is why 2 is my favorite, it actually provides challenge after repeated play throughs
Because ascetics could easily be abused in order to gain early/infinite access to materials and gear and destroy whatever pacing and difficulty curve the game had.
I agree that the games need a way to re-fight bosses, but anyone saying they liked ascetics for that reason alone is full of it.
STOP LAUGHING AT ME!
But you've got options to fight them again.
1. Be summoned.
2. Die or quit the boss fight near the end.
But what you want in reality is not the bonfire ascetic but some mode to repeat fighting bosses. A system where you would use the memories of a boss soul to relieve the battle would be much better.
>What the other user said plus it allows you to get certain items earlier
Easily fixed by making the boss soul multiple use. To me it's always been asinine that you can only get one item from a boss soul, I'd rather give the soul to the soul smith and then buy as many weapons/items as you want.
Boss fights are a completely different entity when you're summoned vs. fighting them solo. Their AI changes, they aren't focused on you half the time, they can get stun locked easily, etc.
Fuck yes. Rat covenant for life bro. You would just wait for people to come into your specific creepy area and ambush the shit out of them. I think the reward for doing this enough times was a ring that made you look like a ghost dude for even better PvP hijinks.
Jesus Christ I literally suggested what I consider a superior system to bonfire ascetic below the two points I mentioned, you really should be asking yourself if that's a superior system to you.
DaS1 is still the best in the series IMO and the reason you cite is part of why
>But what you want in reality is not the bonfire ascetic but some mode to repeat fighting bosses. A system where you would use the memories of a boss soul to relieve the battle would be much better.
this is dumb though, the cool part of the ascetic is it also advances that area of the game to an additional "NG+" difficulty, so there's somewhat of a "consequence" for using the ascetics.
Why does there need to be a "consequence" for fighting bosses again?
Just make it do you can bring their soul to an NPC and be able to fight them again indefinitely. You won't gain any Souls or items for doing it; it's purely for the sake of practice.
Which fits considering that it's a multiplayer game and being able to practice against bosses would help with being a valuable summon partner.
>the cool part of the ascetic is it also advances that area of the game to an additional "NG+" difficulty
There are other options to do this, the Covenant of Champions does this right from the get go. I personally think this being dropped is what was truly disappointing with DS3.
I recall one time a Rat Covenant member tried to ambush me in the water. I had light armor and a lot of stamina so I circled him and then sprinted for the ladder. He had a lot of the traps setup but I managed to do it all perfectly and escape.
I also recall invading in the Bell Tower at the Lava Keep and then targeting Bellbros. Not only did they not expect it but they tended to suck at PvP. One time the host then dropped me an effigy while using the Thank You.
The moral of the story is DS2 had awesome multiplayer disregarding soul memory.
Hollow Knight did this and it felt fucking awful, taking away bosses from their environment just isnt right, they gotta have the right locale, the right tone, the path leading up to the boss is just as important as the boss itself
Rat Covenant would be more cool if the summoned enemy couldn't just BC out.
>disregarding the actual gameplay in PVP
A lot of people always confused my point of DS2 the best PvP with DS2 having the best combat. It introduced and refined a lot of PvP mechanics but they were unfortunately overshadowed by how janky the game itself could be at times. I fucking hope powerstancing makes a return in any future Souls/Souls-esque FromSoft games.
