I want to get into the SMT series. Which game is a good place to start?
I want to get into the SMT series. Which game is a good place to start?

strange journey redux
1 unless you're a pussy ass zoomer bitch.
read the novels
Devil Survivor Overclocked, each playthrough is quite short and it has several endings, each with a bonus day on 3DS.
Digital Devil Saga if you want more religious symbolism and a long party based RPG.
Persona 5
Some SMT game, retardo
Persona 4.
To add onto those, Persona 3. Now play them in reverse order of what was posted and you've played all the best SMT games.
4, DeSu1, Nocturne, Strange Journey, DDS1 are all pretty good
SMT IV was pretty pretty much made for newcommers.
Strange journey is also a decent place to start.
Ignore DDSfags
Ideally your home in Tokyo, when your mother asks you to go out and get some coffee make sure to take a gun with you.
There is a cool dude looking for his girlfriend and a school shooter on the loose. Help the CHAD and shot the school shooter since the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with one. Though steal his gun off his corpse, don't be retarded and leave it there.
Imagine being this retard. Considering Persona fans play for the story (because otherwise why wouldn't you just play other SMT games) they ought to just play P2 since the series got worse plot-wise with each entry after it
strange journey

devil survivor
start with nocturne, strange journey, iv, or dds
don't start with devil survivor it's a spinoff and has totally different gameplay and story structure
Jack bros
Any game's as "good place to start" as the next one
The fuck you think's gonna happen if you don't like it?
Shin Megoomy Tensay Triple: Lucifer's Call: Maniacal Chronicle Edition featuring Raydoo Koozynohur from the Rye Dough series, with the Hardtype Mod installed and going for TDE on your first run.
Strange journey was my first and I thought it was pretty good
Devil Survivor 1 or Nocturne
>SMT
>Persona
Image being this retarded
Why did you call out Persona but not anyone saying DDS or Devil Survivor?
DeSu 2 record breaker
Not SMT but Kyuyaku Megami Tensei has MTI&II, with I being a really nice, simple introduction to the franchise, and II being a genuine underrated gem.
Whatever you do don't start with anything on PS2
Persona really is a separate series at this point, whilst the various SMT spin-offs stay much more true to the SMT soul and feel
What is the SMT "soul and feel"? Because the tone varies wildy from game to game, tonally Raidou is nothing like DDS which is nothing like Nocturne which is nothing like Strange Journey
What the fuck
Not him, but that's one of the main issues with this fandom. You can mention DDS, Devil Survivor, Soul Hackers, whatever as good entry games to the series and people won't bat an eye. However, the moment you mention Persona people lose their minds. There's almost always a particular bias against Persona, whether it be the fanbase (which is actually cancerous as all hell), or the popularity it's received over the years in comparison to SMT. It's truthfully unnecessary, but there's nothing you can do about it. People will continue to be biased until the end of time, and it'll probably get worse when SMTV releases and people try to gatekeep.
What part confuses you? Help the CHAD, shoot the school shooter. It's two simple instructions.
>and people try to gatekeep.
And that's a good thing.
>Devil Survivor is "more true to SMT" than Persona
The only one that could even be considered an "SMT Spinoff" is Devil Summoner, since the first game actually carried the SMT name, and even then the games after the original were a pretty big departure.
Same, but I suspect that mostly comes from a lot of the modern fanbase being people who got into it from Persona but want to seem cool by disliking it, so they don't actually understand the dynamics of the franchise. Same reason why so many people now think Nocturne is the best game in the series, they played Persona 4 then wanted to play a "real" SMT so they went with the only 3D one.
Nocturne seems to be where a lot of people start
>Persona really is a separate series at this point
Persona 5 was easily the most SMT esque title to date thus far outside of the original 1-2 duology. It not only brought back Demons as Shadows, but Guns as well.
Play Nocturne on Normal blind. That'll give you a good general feel of SMT
>You can mention DDS
There's a subset of autists who start tossing torches at anyone praising DDS
Devil Survivor is unironically more true to the franchise in general than Persona, yes. Have you played it? The setup and execution is pretty classic SMT, gravity defying tits don't change this fact
Chiaki would have been top tier if her tits defied gravity
Devil Survivor is far more divergent gameplay wise, and tone is pretty similar to P1/P2
Step 1: Read the first two novels, then the OVA
Step 2: Play Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (upgraded DDS:MT1 and 2)
Step 3: Play Shin Megami Tensei 1
Step 4: Play Shin Megami Tensei 2
After that, you can branch out to "SMT: If..." and then continue to Nocturne, or you can skip it and go directly there. After Nocturne you can branch to Digital Devil Saga 1+2 and Raidou 1+2 or you can go skip to Strange Journey (Regular or Redux).
Gameplay wise, yes because it's a different genre of play (SRPG) compared to the traditional Press Turn formula that the mainline presents. That's truthfully where it ends though. The apocalyptic setting as a theme and focus on invading supernatural forces is still pretty similar to the mainline.
