Do you prefer character designs in video games to lean towards realism or away from realism?

away

I think it's more interesting when writers create something under the restriction of trying to make things that are believable within the setting they created, even better when they follow a theme
So no random floating eyeball monsters just because, or having them be handwaved by "some portal"

So basicially, realistic designs in the context of the story?

In between.
I hate it when the models feel too plastic like especially the hair, so it needs to lean on realism to some degree

That is an amazing fucking work of art and I'm impressed every time I see it.

I'm most impressed at how they handled fabric.

If it were made today, twitter landwhales would be trying to have the sculptor arrested for hate speech.

But there are sculptures like this made nowadays....

Pardon me.

I agree, but I'm also ok with cell-shading.

Right, I wouldn't expect every game to just have humans and real animals with real-world technology but it's really enjoyable when you can look at, say a monster or weapon and answer for yourself; "Oh it's like this because of this. It looks like this because this happened."
It just shows the writer really thought things through.

For example, the Cragspider from Dark Souls. A really monstrous, fire breathing creature that at first, feels out of place and bizarre in a swamp. But then you learn about Quelaag, and Blighttown's proximity to the Demon Ruins, plus the theme of insects being linked to Chaos and fire magic, and it just makes sense, despite being bizarre.

they can do either as long as the art direction is good

have never understood the more realism is better mindset

I kind of agree. One of my favorite monster archetypes are the ones that are manmade or an result of a freak accident. Mewtwo is a nice example of this.

Depends on the game. I think characters need to be realistic within their own universe, but that universe should be up to the developer.
As an example, despite being heavily stylized, Animal Crossing villagers are "Realistic" within the context of Animal Crossing.

Generally away, but I'm a filthy weeb and love the big eyes small mouth legs = 60% of character height aesthetic.

Depends on atmosphere, style and mood of the game. Everything goes, as long as it feels like it aligns with game world's internal logic.

depends on the tone of the game
silly wacky games should have less realistic graphics while serious ones should have realistic graphics
its really retarded how the "serious" ones are exclusive to a console that can't even process the realistic graphics tho

I wonder how many people have fapped to that statue
At least one

there the same statue dumbass

Two now.

>can't read
>calls others dumb
Impressive.

My absolute favourite is Akihiko Yoshida's artstyle. It's 80% anime but still feels a little more realistic. I can imagine his art transitioning to real life much better than other japanese art. It fits nicely in a serious game, but at the same time it ages better due to the strong direciton. The sprite work in FFT/TO is great too.

People will fap to anything, so a statue isn't entirely out of the question. Though admittably, the statue is hot.

It must be easier to sculpt bodies with draped fabric, or else they wouldn't have done it so often right?

It's a highly skilled piece of art that required hundreds of hours of dedication and passion to complete. Of course people fapped to it.

Imagine what this did to the "medieval peasants" back then.

If there visually appealing and interesting that's all that matters

True.

Good taste. Same goes for Yoji Shinkawa.

Attached: 240.jpg (1280x933, 152K)

Both have merit.
However, i prefered slightly fantasy.

this is not real art according to liberals
real art is shitting on a canvas
real art is making ugly doodles with your period blood

They weren’t medieval. One of them was done in the 1800s (Undine Rising from the Waters). The other was The Veiled Truth made in 1750.

Really depends on theme of the game but i like different design style.

>This what alt right retards believes
KINO AND BASED

It was made in the 1750s mate. You're off by a couple of eras, that shit counts as modern.

Attached: C_fhdx9XUAQV2DD.jpg (630x790, 81K)

My nigger. Also, Vagrant Story has aged phenomenally.

>republicans actually believe this

how have you been talking to my grandpa

learn to speak english before calling people retarded, pajeet

You first

Or maybe his retarded uncle

Same. I loved his work on the Bravely Default series.

Attached: hero_2.0.jpg (1600x900, 252K)

you can't even bring yourself to try and put even a tiny speck of effort into those, can you?

I'm not sure since it requires a lot of attention to detail.

>This what alt right retards believes

indeed liberals hate putting effort into things so they hate art that takes skill
that's why they consider shitting on a canvas to be art

style>realism

Away, even if there's something autistically pleaseing about a game like RDR2 that creates pretty realistic landscapes and such. To have the power to create anything in 2D or 3D space and to simply mimic nature seems a waste.

But what if you mimic reality in games to achieve things you normally can't or wouldn't do without actual consequence. Like flying or killing, etc.

You have the power to do whatever you want in videogames, and you choose to be realistic? Ill never understand.

Then you have like GTA and those are okay but not my ideal game.

depends on the game, and we need realistic games to truly appreciate the uniqueness of videogames that do not try to look realistic.

those are leftists, not liberals
Right = liberals AND conservationists
Left = retards that support transexuals and other garbage shit that doesnt help at all.

Away. Oftentimes character designs that tend towards realism don't even know what realism is.

Attached: 1556339697639.jpg (801x1173, 252K)

>American politics is as retarded as their whole government
Wow user, you seem really knowledgeable on politics

For those who prefer stylization over realism, what kind of style do you prefer?

Attached: lorenzo-bartolini-sculpture-22-best-lorenzo-bartolini-images-on-pinterest-sculptures-nymphs.jpg (720x540, 35K)

Whatever looks the best for the individual game, that's why style is cooler than realism in the first place.
However stuff that's "semi-realistic" and not too cartoony has the best of both worlds. Realistic proportions help me identify better with the characters and feel more involved in the world.

Attached: 1555648307954.gif (498x510, 549K)

both are fine

"Realism" in western terms usually means making everything brown and ugly while at the same time making lots of mistakes because the artists couldn't be bothered to even look the most basic things up.

If I ever get the chance to sculpt a lifesize statue like the ones in this thread I'll post it on Yea Forums(nel) and hope you would fap to it.

Away
Realism always ends up limiting the game in some way.
Also they age like milk.

>character design
not realistic

>game mechanics
realistic

Who ever made it in the 1750s should have sex.

Depends but preferably away. Style ages better than realism and it's a medium where you can lean away from realism. It's like asking if I'd prefer the nu live action/cg Disney remakes more or the classic versions more. Even if I like the nu version I'd probably still lean towards the classic animation.
