Good 3D body part models tend to be a fad. Back in the PS2/Xbox/GC days fingers were all the rage since everything had brick hands. PS3/360 gen was all about sweat and wrinkles and such. Every gen devs will use a random body part to represent their "how far graphics have come" speech. I honestly think we always had the technology to have good 3D feet models but devs just like to focus on 1 aspect and never everything else. With modern scanning technology you don't need to cut detail on anything really. Just look at DMC5. They show some feet for all of like 10 seconds and they look great even with detailed soles and everything. Cutting corners like that on your main character models like Bethesda does is just laziness.
