I know I'm late to the party, but I recently got into Undertale, and I found out that most of the fandom seems to hate my favorite characterm Alphys. She consistently ranks among the lowest in polls, and even Yea Forums hates her. Many people even say that the worst thing about the game is how you can't kill her. That seems extremely cruel to me. She made mistakes, sure, but she's still fundamentally a good person. A common complaint is that she's supposedly annoying with her phone, but I thought that this whole sequence was incredibly cute. In fact, she's really cute in most of her appearances. So what gives, why the hate?
I know I'm late to the party, but I recently got into Undertale...
fujos deserve death
Spoilers for true ending
She's responsible for the horrific reincarnation of several deceased characters. Some of them were already dead, others were just sick but were killed as a result of her experiments (moreso to do with their illnesses killing them off because they weren't receiving care for them, just being injected with DETERMINATION). Their souls came back as the amalgamates and are all kinds of fucked up. She's also responsible for Flowey's existence due to these experiments.
She gets best girl Undyne and never receives any comeuppance for her sins.
The ending where she kills herself is the best retribution.
>that last spoiler
...Wait what? Does that happen in the genocide run, or is it one of those endings where you kill some of the main characters?
What's wrong with them? They're amusing.
I'm aware of all of that, but so what? She only had good intentions when she did all of those things. She also felt extremely bad for everything.
I hated her because she put me through a lot of shit for no good reason. Fuck her puzzles, fuck her.
>Kill at least 10 monsters
>Kill Papyrus OR Undyne
>Let Toriel live
Alphys disappears and isn't heard from again. Coulda run away, coulda killed herself.
She makes fun of socially awkward anime fans.
I'm a socially awkward anime fan and she's an inspiration for me.
She ruins Hotland.
She ruins most of Undyne in the True Ending.
She's a very, very bad person who did some real fucked up shit and faced zero consequence for her actions.
Has shit taste in anime.
Take your pick.
But the only thing that's true in your list is that she has shit taste in anime, and even then it's not really her fault since she doesn't get to pick. She just retrieves whatever people throw away.
Finished Pacifist yet? Finish the game and find out what a real piece of work she is.
I literally just did all the playthroughs a couple days ago. Now I know why everyone likes Sans, the one true hero. Jesus christ what a boss fight. One of my favorites of all time.
>>Kill Papyrus OR Undyne
Yeah but they're cool
I did finish it. As I said, she made mistakes, but that doesn't make her a bad person.
A true hero doesn't wait until you've killed everyone else before intervening. Literally all the other characters have been more heroic. Great fight and great song, though.
>DR Alphys having the opposite taste in anime that UT Alphys
Does it give you hope for her character in this game?
Sans doesn't intervene until the end because he knows you're gonna reset so it doesn't matter. He's just waiting for you to feel guilty and reset the game. He only gets involved when it's clear you're feeling no guilt and you aren't gonna reset.
She reminds them of themselves.
Yet at the beginning of the game he tries to threaten us instead of trying to make us feel guilty. He's basically provoking us into killing more.
He definitely does try to make you feel guilty. Remember the line "my brother wants to see a human, so could you keep pretending to be one?"
When you don't kill his brother he even thanks you everything he does in the game is to encourage you to not kill everyone and to not reset.
She has one of the more interesting character arcs in the game as someone who has to face real mistakes and insecurities, but I think her comic relief moments wear out their welcome pretty quickly.
>Get funding by the king to research and figure out how Human determination works
>Find out that it’s what keeps them whole through strife
>Sees if determination can bring back long dead friends and family
>Oh my god it works, let me tell their families
>One month later they fucking melt
>What the fuck do you even do at this point
>Get too scared to confront literally anyone about anything to do with this because the situation is completely and irreparably fucked
Anyone who can’t empathize with Alphys being totally scared of interacting with people after what she’s been through and what she must feel responsible for are the real monsters.
>Remember the line "my brother wants to see a human, so could you keep pretending to be one?"
I honestly didn't feel any guilt when he said that. It sounded like subtle insult.
OP if this is a purely sexual attraction you're alright but her character is awful.
>take one part Yea Forums moviegame with typical shit writing
>throw in autistic "find the right exact sequence of things to do that we don't even hint at for the REAL ending" bullshit
>tack on bullet hell garbage for good measure
Why is this "game" popular again?
There's really nothing sexual about it for me. If she were a human, then odds are I might be attracted, but I'm not a furfag, so nope. I just really love her personality. Undyne coincidentally happened to be my second favorite even before I realized there was something between them.
>>throw in autistic "find the right exact sequence of things to do that we don't even hint at for the REAL ending" bullshit
The game gives you a walkthrough on how to get the true ending, I'm surprised people have trouble getting it. Flowey at the end telling you to replay the game without killing or hang out with Papyrus/Undyne/Alphys is not clear enough?
If you don't kill anyone it literally tells you exactly what to do to get the good ending.
I think that one is on you than.
I honestly don't understand the appeal of Undertale. The writing and humor is so painfully forced and tumblr-y (or whatever fandom this thing originated from). It somehow manages to be more obnoxious than a Borderlands game. I didn't laugh once during my entire playthrough of it, but I rolled my eyes countless times.
It will also age terribly because of alll the dated pop culture references. Like, there's one part of the game where that scientist interrupts you with messages/calls every few steps you take, which is obviously parodying Facebook message updates. Not only does this show a child's understanding of how comedy works, but that segment is excruciating to play through, because you get interrupted every few steps.
And the mechanics are completely disconnected from the narrative. In good RPGs, non-violent conflict resolution is handled through dedicated mechanics, such as stealth and speech. Undertale doesn't contextualize any of its mechanics and just has this completely abstract bullet hell mini game. How does that even make sense?
The twist is supposed to be that monters are actually peaceful and just afraid of you, but then why do they immediately try to murder you? Why don't they approach you peacefully first and see if they can reason with you? Or at least run away?
Why is there a village of monsters who don't attack you? Again, this village has monsters who interact with you peacefully, so why can't the other monsters do that?
Why are you labeled as a genocidal maniac for fighting back in self-defense?
The whole thing falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.
Is this a copy pasta?
Alphys kinda reminds me of Monika (from DDLC, if you somehow haven't heard of that game yet)
>they both do bad shit out of ignorance, Alphys creates some abominations when experimenting with Determination and Monika kills the other girls while trying to break out of the game, since the powers she obtains as club president cause her to believe she and the player are the only the two real beings in the world
>they're both hated by a large portion of their respective game's fanbases for that
However, there's several key differences:
>Monika is attractive while Alphys is ugly
>Monika loves the player, while Alphys loves another female NPC
>Alphys is annoying as fuck
That leads to Monika being DDLC's most popular character (though she's also the most hated by fans of the other girls), while Alphys has a much worse reception among the UT fanbase.
A frogposter posted it, so what do you think? These people aren't capable of original thought.
Yeah, it's posted in most ut threads.
>The twist is supposed to be that monters are actually peaceful and just afraid of you, but then why do they immediately try to murder you? Why don't they approach you peacefully first and see if they can reason with you? Or at least run away?
Can't believe id respond to a frogposter but it was explained that 'bullet hells' are literally a form of body language for them, even saying some monsters give each other bullet patterns like birthday cards. Aside from near the end all of them just wanna chat but as a human its like a world of people made out of anti-matter wanting a handshake, not matter how nice you're still gonna blow up.
She kills tons and tons of monsters, and then never gets any form of punishment for it. She got away with murder. Multiple times. In a game where killing even one monster makes the game start guilt tripping you hard. It just feels very contrary and selective.
That's not true. Alphys never killed anyone. She took monsters who were dying and healed them. It didn't work out in the end for them, but that wasn't something she did on purpose.
So she increased suffering because of her sick fetish for wanting to see what happens when determination is injected into dying monsters.
You know the thing about murder?
If a person tries to justify it.
It confirms that its murder.
Most people would have accepted her getting ANY kind of punishment for her mistakes. But she gets off completely free of the burden of consequences. Again, in a game all about consequences when it comes to how you play it.
>So she increased suffering
By accident.
>because of her sick fetish for wanting to see what happens when determination is injected into dying monsters.
Because Asgore ordered her to do research on souls.
She felt crippling guilt and anxiety for who knows how long, and then she had to face everyone with her mistakes. That's not what I call being free of consequences. What do you think should have happened? Public torture and execution just because she made mistakes while trying to help her people?
>but its ok for this reason
>but its ok for that reason
Its not ok for any reason. At all. And like I said, trying to justify it is the same as justifying murder. Ever heard of third degree murder? Its when death occurs by accident, but as a side effect from a cause and intention that is unsound.
In other words, death caused from fucking around with something not meant to be messed with.
Tell me she didn't have the choice to refuse Asgore I fucking dare you.
No you fucking edgelord, obvious jail time. Quit exaggerating because your fictional waifu is under scrutiny.
>experimental medical treatment is now third degree murder
Shit, someone needs to stop all those dastardly hospitals then
murder vs manslaughter is determined by having a guilty mind
since she was trying to make the monsters immortal, and based on what Determination does to humans, also had a justifiable belief that what she was doing would make the monsters immortal, she did not have a guilty mind
I can't believe I'm getting involved in a fucking UT debate 2 years after I last opened the game up, let alone a debate about a character I didn't really give a shit about
It's like I'm arguing with a Sayori fan who keeps going "nuh uh Monika caused more pain to the other girls"
Fujos are the niggers of the anime fandom. Alphys is the nigger king because she knows that the anime and manga are fiction, but tells everyone it's a recording of human history. Also because she literally self inserts herself into your story.
I don't like her because she's ugly.
what good did she think would come out of resurrecting the dead? shes straight up retarded
I think she's pretty cute.
My main reason for disliking her is how she does near to nothing to help you to stop mettaton and even then her being annoying with her social media bullshit makes it seems like she doesn't give a fuck about her robot being out of control. I couldn't care less about her muh ""deep"" shady past
>her being annoying with her social media bullshit makes it seems like she doesn't give a fuck about her robot being out of control.
Because he wasn't out of control at this point. He was just pretending to be.
If you don't hate every annoying """""character"""" in this shit story, you are 100% gay
>0 humans killed in war with monsters
that's sad, even birds are capable of getting the occasional human kill. if they're this weak they deserve to no longer exist.
Yeah, and not only her attitude towards the problem but also the lack of consequences is the worst but this is never adressed as a problem.
Still felt that she couldn't care less about the situation. The humour event definitely wasn't in a good time. So I ended up disliking her.
Honestly the whole war was such fodder story at a point that toby literally overlooked a bunch of details regarding it, for example, Asgore went crazy over asriel's death and tried to break the barrier but humans literally did absolutely fucking nothing about the barrier after chara's death and still had more 6 kids failling into underground, not even an investigation, nothing
Serious answer: she wasn't trying to, previous poster is wrong. The entire project was to find a way to use monster soul energy to open the barrier (you don't need 7 human souls, you need power equivalent to 7), where the main problem is that they don't persist after death and thus can't be stored like human souls. If monster souls can be stored somehow, then all you have to do is wait for enough monsters to die of natural causes and they're all free. She figured since monsters lack determination, then giving dead monsters determination might allow their soul to persist even after the body turns to dust (like a human's). Instead, the dead/dying monsters willed themselves back to life, which was never intended or expected, and then because their non-physical bodies couldn't handle it, they began to melt.
She's ugly, fat and likely smells
they probably thought something actually capable of killing got those kids, like a tiger or a small stream
We have literally no idea how long its been since the barrier was erected. Long enough for entire cities to be built underground. It's likely nobody even remembers anymore, which is why they say "people who go to the mountain dont come back" and not "monsters are there".
A whole war happened, the area not being famous or secured, is weird to say the least. Plus kids disappearing around the exactly same area.
Not an excuse, Asgore didn't ignore right away, so why humans would to
specially when the war started exactly when humans reacted right away at a threat, makes no sense
Why would she care when she was completely in control? She started panicking later on when Mettaton went rogue.
What are you talking about? I think you are confused as to the timeline of events user.
I am talking about from the war until asriel's death by humans that thought he killed chara and how asgore took decisions regarding it about the barrier which makes sense but not much sense how humans ignored it completely despite chara's "death by asriel" being a proof that monters could be a threat, just like humans started a whole war because a monster had potential to turn into a powerful threat, it makes no sense at all
