They are old ladies and former firekeepers that have lost all hope for the losers that keep arriving to Drangleic only to fail miserably and become a +1 to the hollow population that roams the land.
Becoming a firekeeper requires a lot of sacrifice, so imagine how they feel after spending their entire lives serving failure after failure.
At first I hated them, but now I think they have to laugh, otherwise they would fall into desperation for having wasted their lives.

That's not a particularly high bar to surpass. Dark Souls 3 is one of the most soulless cash grabs ever made.

DS2 fans need to understand is that the ONLY thing DS2 does better than DS3 on is its multiplayer--for all things singleplayer (aka the meat of the series) DS3 blows DS2 out of the water, and DS3 isn't even the best entry with regards to singleplayer
