Little bit of both. Run to the mill open world encounters is mostly fucking shooting at goons 'till they day. However, new powers proves invaluable in many "handcrafted" location, against bosses or large group of ennemies. Jumping and staying suspended mid-air a few seconds just to detonate explosive barrel (that would otherwise be out of your line of sight) just saved my life a few hours ago, for instance.

I'm digging the combat and the exploration was better in the early game. Once I figured out how scattered the abilities and weapons were, I felt forced to just beeline from ark-to-ark and it killed the immersion for me. All the abilities are fun and a couple of the weapons are pretty neat, I just wish they had frontloaded those more instead of trying to put them behind exploration. Engaging bases with more abilities is just more fun which is a stark contrast from similar games where the more upgrades you have, the more of an unstoppable monster you become and the grind just becomes tedious.

i think in this case it's more the screeching chimp expression, retarded hair style reminiscent of old style cartoon babies and the visual diarrhea of makeup on his face that makes it disgusting.

Fairly unremarkable, as someone playing through it now. The shooting is just modern shooter mechanics, with ammo type switching and sub-items for grenades, wingsticks, healing, etc. as well as a simple crafting system. Quests aren't very interesting, and though you do go to various mission areas, you will probably have to run back through them a second time in reverse or down a different path for some other quest. The other half of the game is driving around with rather clunky physics, and vehicular combat that boils down to "face a target and let the auto-aim do the work for you."

Rage 2 tossed out a lot of Rage 1's more unique ideas for being Far Cry + Saints Row 4, but then Rage 1 was very dry otherwise and an unremarkable game besides the megatexture tech, and that tech made the game awfully unoptimized for what amounted to a lack of tiled textures ultimately and little else.

I think it's just the environment. The characters do look great.

It's pretty gud in the World Building, AI (they hide behind cover, throw nades, try to flank etc.) and Shooting department. It's definitely worth trying on a Sale or something, even though it has its haters and was panned around the time of release for bugs stemming from Megatexture Tech.

Also it sure was pretty from afar, though objects and textures get blurry the closer you get.

Megatextures are not about high fidelity graphics, but rather a huge blanket texture the covers the entire game world and the artists basically draw over it. The point of this system was to limit the amount of repeated textures in the game. Problem is the idea was as refined as it needed to be for the game's launch date. The full size of Rage's textures alone is over a terabyte.

I know what megatextures are, but they are still pretty memeworthy and no other game to my knowledge used them.

Overall a resounding "meh" at best. Gunplay feels decent enough, but the combat never really comes into its own, its feels very disjointed with weird crafting elements and hub towns despite playing like a corridor shooter. Level design isn't really anything special, and the plot feels very disjointed. Its like a call of duty mod with the skin of an open world game on it.

I would know since I worked on Rage 2 and we had to play all of Rage 1 before starting proper on the second game.

technically speaking, the latest CS:GO battle royale map added a week or so ago uses the concept of a megatexture for the entire landmass, but it's both low-res as fuck and had other textures and assets piled on-top to hide the problems and limitations.

The first mission had multiple levels of verticality in every section giving the player a reason to use the double jump and take new positions in the area.
The game gave you an omnidirectional dash on the ground and in the air.
You also had a ground pound without a needlessly long animation by jumping and pressing crouch.

I could go into the other missions and the mix of equipment they gave you to add variety but the game was largely unimpressive

Putting a bus in your way to make you use jetpack jump isn't a good use of the mechanic.
All the other times you just walk around and using the jetpack is not needed.
There is one scripted moment where you jump down a building where you have to slow down the jump before hitting the ground, and after that you NEVER EVER use this mechanic ever again in the entire game.

That sounds about right. I replay games I enjoy a lot. Don't you? I probably have like over 600 hours in Ridge Racer Type 4. I'm not even that good at the game, I just replay it over and over with different teams, customize my paint, listen to the music, looking at all the different environments, watching my replays. Vidya is comfy for me and I enjoy my time in games I love.
