I’ve tried Dark Souls a few times but never really “got” it. Any help/tips/things I should know??

Play DS2SoTFS and if you manage to clock 10 hours in it, go back and try to finish DS1.
Playing subsequent games is going to be hell. It's not for everyone, maybe even try BB if you have Ps+.
Or maybe, just maybe, try one of the 3 million, six hundred thousand, one hundred and thirty two builds that exist in the infinite amount of forums dedicated JUST for DS and titles alike.

If you've already put some time into it and aren't enjoying yourself, just stop playing. It's not for everyone. Don't be one of those faggots who powers through hating every second of it because you want to look like you're cool for having finished it.

-Equip load is very important, your most important defense is rolling and you get 3 types of rolls depending on your equip roll. Fast roll when you are under 25% of your max encumberance, normal for under 50% and fatrolls for 50 and over. It's good to be able to do normal rolls for the most of the game.
-Rolling itself relies heavily on invincibility frames, when you start your rolling animation nothing can hurt you. So it's sometimes a good idea to roll into your enemy's attack instead of away
-Watch your stamina
-Don't button mash since the game works by queuing your commands, if you input a few attacks in a row, you may be unable to roll away once enemy starts attacking
-All animations take a long to execute and generally cannot be cancelled from. So be aware when you can attack or drink estus, instead of doing it blindly. There are many bosses that can start and execute their attack before you finish healing yourself, so just because the boss is not doing anything at this moment doesn't mean it's safe to heal
-Despite what people tell you the game is not supposed to be ball-busting hard, so if die over and over and over again in the same spot it's probable that you are simply in a wrong place, go check if there are other areas to explore instead of banging your head against the wall

If you want to play it casually, do this:
0) don't watch any guides or walkthrough if you want to actually play it;
1) learn what each stat actually does (using wiki is aloower for that one thing only);
2) spend souls as frequetnly as you can;
3) don't bother with becoming human except for kindling bonefires (summoning is gay and invader will only only fuck your shit up if you don't "get" it);
3a) if you still choose to get full experience (and online is still functioning) just wave to your invader and then point towards the last bonefire you've visited (and go there) so if you die you could get to your bloodstain easily; if that person is not a faggot, all he wants it a duel of skill or a cheap humanity; pretty much no one wishes to stomp on the new player at this point
4) do some suicide runs in the begining - like running past a couple of skeletons to get winged spear or Zwei or past some stone guards to get Elite Knight set. Just don't get too dedicated
5) The most cost effective way is to use lightining or fire weapon; it does not benefit form your stats (so you could focus on vitality and endurance), but deals good damage; It takes time to find a blacksmith that could do that assention, but you could stick with Raw before that. You'll eventually find lighting one for sure;
6) unless you play PC version, learn to parry;
7) don't be a slave of target-lock;
8) don't hurt anything that does not hurt you - it's most likely an NPC that would later provide some services to you;
9) chosing master key will open some shortcuts to you, the witch ring will let you talk to one of the wifus;
10) when in doubt if a chest is a mimic, punch it with your fist;
11) when you wisit Duke's Archives, use an elevator and beat that one unique enemy, equip that soul ring that protects frome death by curse
That's it.
The most useful trick would be to get enough faith and attunement to use homecoming spell - it's a free homeward bone.

That one (and fall damage mitigation) actually gets better the less is your equip load. A 5% is better than 20%.

I just laugh at the enemies with this thing equipped. I don't even mind fat rolling because you don't even need to roll with this thing. Just block and unga bunga with a big sword.
