I don't understand how something as broad as "indie" could be a red flag. It also doesn't match up with my experience, given I almost exclusively play indies nowadays.

The rest are red flags. Spiritual successorshit in particular. It not only means they don't have any original ideas and are hoping you'll mistake that for a deliberate decision, but it also means you'll inevitably be comparing it to the far better game it's aping.
