Japanese Mahjong is where you have to memorize dozens, and I do mean dozens, of combinations of pieces in order to make plays, but since you don't know any combinations you'll glaze over as you end your turn with a winning combination right under your nose.

As a rule of thumb, only chase after riichi if you have at least mangan. But if it's dealer riichi you might want to reconsider still.

It can't be helped, late game you go tanki for a dicky tile like this. Dora, dora indicator, live dragon, other eerie shit. Earlier in the game you are in the right to get rid of it intermediately and dealing in if the hand was closed and you didn't notice any tsumogiri going, should be an exceptionally rare case.

You are halfway through it.
If you can see 4 tiles of a kind in the discards that creates a "wall" e.g you see 4 of the 5pin in the discards then that makes the 2pin and 8pin tiles "safe" tiles as it makes the 43 and 67 sets less likely to work because you would be waiting in 4 tiles instead of 8. You can use that as defense if needed or to trap players into dealing those tiles.
A wall of 4s makes the 1 and 7 tiles safe.
A wall of 1s and 7 makes the 4 tile super safe.
A wall of 6s makes the 3 and 9 tiles safe.
Etc.
Two sided waits are the optimal hand formation so it should work most of the time.

You got it completely wrong. Walls don't make suji tiles safe. They make certain ryanmen impossible and thus make some tiles rather safe.
3 makes 1 and 2 safe (duh)
5 makes 3 and 7 safe cause it becomes impossible to do a ryanmen wait on them.
But that only works against good players. Silver and below will still just do close waits.

My discard priority (assuming this is your opening hand):
Round Wind -> Wind of the player to my right -> Wind of the player to the middle -> Wind of the player to my left -> Dragons -> My Wind.

Tiles that have already been discarded move -down- in priority. The goal is to discard useless tiles before someone else gets a pair of them and is able to call.

(Useful) Honors I have a pair of move down in priority. I could draw the third, pon if I the hand will be decent even after opening it, it will scare people away from discarding those tiles, and if someone is in riichi it's usually safe to discard a pair of honors you've been holding.

And of course if your hand is complete unworkable trash or you need a big dick to get back in the game then hold on to single honor tiles.

If you're holding one honor tile, the odds that you get first a pair and then a triplet are piss all. A pair of yakuhai tiles (dragon /round wind / seat wind) is worth a whopping 2 fu and your hand is far less flexible if you're stuck using that as your pair.

If you draw it -later- in the game and no one's discarded it by then you might gamble on them all being in the wall because normally players would discard it but whatever. You might also need a big dick hand to stay relevant and have to gamble.

Then again, I'm not particularly good.

Then the East player (or South in the south round), who did have an incentive to hold on to his round wind, has that many more turns to draw into a pair and may call on the tile for two han compared to the potential one han you'd get for holding it. Keep in mind that even if you do draw a second round wind it is fucking useless because calling to get the third for an open yakuhai is a shitty hand compared to just going for riichi.

Extenuating circumstances:
- Any scenario where it's okay to go for an open hand anyway, namely, loads of dora with shapes in place to make more calls.
- You're 3rd or 4th and need every han you can get.

If you see no chance to easily upgrade you hand to sanshoku, pinfu or tanyao, then go for it, especially if you are dealer. But very early riichi have this tendency that if nobody'll deal in the first 3-4 turns, then propably nobody will deal at all.

Get into tenpai faster.

If someone else is in tenpai (riichi, or an open hand with several calls unless it looks like a 1000 point shitter hand then who cares if you deal in) then you better be in tenpai, one-away with a good wait, or two-away with a good wait and a high scoring hand to even consider staying in the round.

The round wind, unless it's your wind, is worth two han to someone else and only one to you. And it's only worth one han to you if you get three of them, not two, and if the process of getting three of them doesn't open your hand (which loses you at least one han in most cases). It's shitty for me, potentially really good for someone else.

Winds really are the weakest tiles, dragons always make a yaku, their yakuman requires less tiles and 2 triplets and a pair is also a yaku.

You throw the round wind away first unless it's your wind too since it is a potential two han. If someone else has that wind, especially in east, that's already two han. It's risky to hold on to, and not profitable enough to keep despite risk.

Obviously. If you don't, you will continue to feed. Sometimes it cannot be helped, but other times if you pay attention to your opponents Pon or Chi, it isn't too difficult to figure out, or predict what they need to finish their hands with their opened melds or their discards.

I don't, I am playing for 6 years and got those (IRL of course): Kokushi, Suu Ankou (three times), Kazoe and Daisangen.

The adrenaline rush as you reach the tenpai is glorious. The fact that you have to keep your poker face is just a topping of the cake.

That's what I thought. I had a turn 2 tenpai on 9-sou and thought it would be a safe 1 tile wait since it was the start of the game and people ditch terminals. 15 turns later some guy closed kans 9-sou and I was fucked. Luckily I didn't riichi but it was over for me at that point.

aaaaand of course, my first ever silver match, utterly crushed and land 4th place. One of those days where everyone else just gets to call riichi on turn 4 or 5 and everything you discard you draw on your next turn.

I do but I'm making my way up to the gold room. Sometimes you just want to kan if you have shit hands are so far behind that only flipping doras and going for toitoi would make any difference. Giving kans when you aren't doing too bad or even in the lead but not the first one to riichi or even at least in riichi is never a good idea though.

Having let's say 4/5 pin and discarding another 5 pin is not furiten for the resulting 3/6 wait. However, if you were to draw another 5 pin once or twice and later end up with a wait for a 5 pin pair or triple it would in fact be furiten.

Furiten is ONLY about the waits. It has nothing do with parts of a sequence in your hand or yakus.
