They recently published books called the Chronicle which describes the entire lore of WoW from vanilla. It also retcons and explains how the raids feed into the lore, such as which faction actually cleared the raid. E.g. You don't need to kill undead a certain way, and they don't have any weak points other than more magic. Their strength usually comes from the person raising them in the first place.

It's used as fuel in a lot of places. Just using it as ammo is a big deal because they can use it with anything, from guns to giant mechs.
