Not really, no. Rage isn't an RPG, has a seamless open world as opposed to BL's segmented zones, and a set weapon roster and no randomly generated guns with differing stats.

The post apocalyptic wasteland is full of degenerates and weirdos. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be off-putting.

Days Gone starts shit and the actual ending sequence is weak but the majority of the game has a solid story and a few decent gameplay loops with some really nice missions. It's flawed as fuck but there are a few moments when you can almost see something really good, and I'm definitely interested in seeing if the devs can do better next time and make the good parts better while cutting back on the shit. I hope to god they just don't give in to reviewers and make their next game have a """"flawed"""" protagonist like the average sony storygame. It was really fun playing as an actual character for once instead of that everyman-but-hes-actually-perfect garbage. Overall, I'd put the game on the same tier as incredible hulk or ultimate spiderman. Worse than Spiderman 2, RDR, the core GTAs, et cetera, but still worth playing if you love open worlds. Not a perfect experience, but still much better than most of the shlock nowadays.

Rage 2, on the other hand, is a bit harder. The actual core gameplay is great, but there is just so much garbage as far as the pacing goes. Turn the game into a level-based FPS like Doom or Half Life 2 where you clear room after room and stage after stage, slowly finding new weapons, and it would be amazing. But the actual game, with its terrible pacing, bullshit collectathon upgrade system, unskippable dialogue that drags on for way too fucking long every time you talk to a sidequest-giver, and so on, all adds up to a shitty experience that just makes you wish the game would do anything other than punish you for trying to skip to the good parts.

The atmosphere and aesthetic are inferior compared to the first one, the writing is a mix between edgy shit, cliche characters and failed joke but goddamn the gunplay feels fucking great. Guns are a blast, and that's pretty much redeeming the entire game for me.

First weapons you get are a decent pistol and a generic assault rifle that chews through ammo way too fast. Follow the railroad until you get access to more guns and are allowed to upgrade them, and things get much better.

The issue isn't that mainstream devs give 9s to everything, its that 9 of their 10 rating points are based entirely on how the game appeals to their feelings. The average complaint about Days Gone, for example, is that the main character is not a nice person and the only radio station is run by some insane 2012 /pol/-tier prepper (in-game lore, the only person who actually prepared an innawoods escape plan with a fucking radio in case of the zombie apocalypse), so they gave the game an average score in the 60s.

It looks pretty good. I hear the gameplay is better than Doom(2016) which is refreshing since that game felt like wasted potential. I'll buy it on sale, it's currently 100 bucks on Steam.
