Then flash forward to college in the late 2000s I'd find even more people that were not only aware of YTMND, but made friends with someone that had their entire soundtrack on hand, which I didn't even know was being put together since I didn't really use that site's forum. I'm going to miss YTMND, it was its own thing and I'll never forget it.

When I think about it, I do think it's kind of silly I feel so melancholy about a website dying, but then I remember all those memories I had with friends and friends I made back then. It's because now everyone takes the internet so seriously. It's not just you, the entire culture of the net has changed. Everyone posting in this thread about how social media ruined it all is right, but I don't think they know exactly how right they are. Back in the day the internet was some wild place where you could just go and leave as you please, but now everyone has the mindset that they must keep up appearances and save face despite being on an anonymous forum. Social media changed the online persona from a detached, ephemeral thing in cyberspace to a physical databank that is traceable back to your real life. Even though we're on a place that doesn't keep track of our names or our faces, the idea that you have to keep up appearances online has seeped so deeply into the public subconscious that you have posters constantly falseflagging and backtracking in internet "debates" as thought they actually had something to lose.
People forgot the rules of the internet, and frankly I don't think they even apply to this thing that the new internet has become.
