They had the original game, completely intact and working. But a lot of work was needed, they had to make a lot of changes to the game to update it for a modern audience. They had to change it so much they couldn't make a real summer release date, but luckily they still caught the very tail end of summer 2019.

The fact that you don't even know about the banter and group interaction that happened in vanilla dungeons is pretty depressing. The dynamic was set up so that you HAD to communicate with other people to beat dungeons. You had to use CC, you needed people to remove certain debuffs, you had to concentrate damage and you would usually ask what bosses people are on-board for.

I played retail recently and everyone just stays completely quiet while doing completely linear dungeons which require no coordination. No one uses CC, long lasting debuffs don't exist either. The majority of the new mechanics revolved around you not standing in a single spot, mechanics which only affect you and not something you have to coordinate with others. Then, when it's finished, everyone gets shipped back off to their own realm and we never see each other again.

there are still going to be a ton of players on your realm that you will be able to meet and socialize with, compete for spawns with, and PvP with. You'll just have a reduced chance of a chance encounter with the same person until the server populations stabilize and they can eliminate the layering. It's not very different from the random chance that some person you meet just won't be online the next time you will anyway.

And yes it might change the server economies but whatever, WoW Classic economies won't be anything like original vanilla anyway so the layering doesn't make it obviously worse.

Its primary purpose is to incentivize traveling all over the world instead of just sitting in one specific spot killing the most XP-efficient mob 300 times in a row until you level up. Bits of backstory and variety with sometimes creative rewards and introduction to gameplay systems like tradeskills are added in as a bonus.

I was there faggot, on day one. The servers (when you could even get on) were overloaded and crammed with people. Most people you met during that first couple of weeks disappeared only to replaced by two brand new people who just joined. It was like that for weeks, even for someone like me who had pre-existing connections and friends from other MMOs who just checked out WoW then went back to their other game.

Sharding/layering would have made virtually no difference whatsoever to those first few chaotic weeks.

But layers are the SIZE OF A FULL SERVER AND ARE CONTINENT WIDE. By definition they're only needed if the actual world is filled with a lot of people.

They don't work like that. The pop is more evenly split between layers then filled up simultaneously, not filled up one at a time. So let's say 3200 people are trying to log into a 3000 pop realm. Two layers are formed with 1600 each, then players are added to those layers until they reach 3k, or until they drop below a total of 3k players and are re-merged.

you assume there wont be any people moving layers because parties, guilds friends, you are assuming those people all log in at the same time - if they dont both layers will fill slowly at first make them both feel underpopulated instead of one filling fast - youre talking about perfect situations - which wont ever happen, especially if a new layer must be made because both become overpopulated at primetime - it will be empty at first, since you cant force people in the original two into the new one.

I haven't played in 10 years, but last I played, spawn times decreased the faster the mobs are killed. So if there's 20 people clearing that field of boards as soon as they spawn, eventually the boars would start respawning instantly. So there's no wait.

Why is this a problem?

Do you even know how these systems even work? They don't only apply when players log in or out. They happen when you reload the world at all so layers can be balanced as long as people are entering and exiting instances, changing continents, etc. I get why people are so apprehensive about layering because on the surface it sounds similar to sharding, but it's actually a cool bit of tech they developed specifically for Classic for the express purpose of solving launch crowding while maintaining authenticity. They could've gone "fuck it" and thrown in sharding like everyone expected but they put effort and work (a miracle for modern Blizz) into a unique system to appease as many people as possible.
