>200 miles of dark stone corridors

That shit's haunted to the max. Fuck that.
Ellora Caves, Kailasanatha Temple
And as for why it's so massive, the history is interesting.
Essentially, they ran out of space for cemeteries in Paris around 1780, and the ones they did have were overflowing to the point that the basements of the churches and other nearby buildings started to have their walls collapse. There was another problem at the time, however, of old, only partially-mapped mineshafts beneath the city, which were currently being explored, inspected, and reinforced to prevent collapses by the authorities.
So, they decided to kill two birds with one stone, and over 6 million bodies were exhumed and placed beneath the city.
Don't remember the number, but I think it's the tiny bugs that disguise as a sandstorm and eat you alive when you sleep as they blow into town

Yes, there's nothing to find in the catacombs. You'll only get lost and die horribly. It's not worth it, user. There's really nothing here.

Also, in the damp parts, there's layers of calcium on the ceiling, and some of the bones have begun to crystallize.

There literally no reason to be scared of caves. They are mostly just natural formations in the earth, sure we have some tight spaces and sometimes go real deep but as long as you inform yourself, properly equip yourself and know your limits cave spelunking can be a very exciting and safe activity.

Mirror's Edge
I got certified over a decade ago so I can't give you a price quote, but I'm sure you could look up the nearest dive shop and see if they offer certification lessons. There's some written and practical tests to take. Gear is typically rented, most divers own a wetsuit, flippers, and mask at most. You can also try it out without certification at certain places, but don't expect to go exploring big shipwrecks. Wreck diving is an additional certification on its own, and can be extremely dangerous.

>What exists today are parts, most no more than a foot or two long -- you’re not going to find a hood or a full frame, and they’re so rusty that it’s almost impossible to tell what car they came from. Much to the delight of automotive archaeologists there are a few exceptions, including a brake drum from an early Beetle, a Fiat 850 valve cover, and the remains of a mid-1960s Citroën 2CV bench seat. Tires are a dime a dozen, and anyone looking to put their steel wheel IQ to the test would have a field day. The only car left is an early-1960s first-generation Ford Cortina whose front and rear fascias have been cut off.
