For reference this is how turn based strategy games look like nowadays

>old bad
>new good
Have sex

What mod OP? Looks sleek as fuck.

Steam HD edition, it's great but no expansions

Publishers were willing to risk more in the early days.
Now they found the safe cash cow in the form of game as service with microtransactions,

SOUL

It's simple OP

>Company wants to make money and milk the players with shady business parctices
Games turn out shit, Blizzard, Bethseda, EA, Valve etc.

>Company wants to make games that people would enjoy playing
Games turn out great

lazy, too jewish, risk averse, desperately trying to find a mythical "larger market" that encompasses every demographic instead of just catering to one

>make game with heart and soul
>soulless players ask why you don't make games with heart and soul

This. It's the company, and those who are running the company. It's why Nintendo will always be good. They have respect for their fans and their reputation

because those developers are basically gone, especially in the AAA industry. They make their games out of statistics and committee approval.
Only indy devs make their games with heart and soul.

This is now a Heroes 3 thread.
What's your favorite faction?

I have a hefty soft-spot for Stronghold, just going ham smashing shit left and right with you orc, ogre and gobbo lads is priceless.

>HD edition
eww

You can also put an HD mod on GOG version and you'll also have the expansions.

I got a problem with the HD mod on the GOG complete version, somehow it doesn't show all these nice prompts when you take over a lumber mill or ore pit etc. Kinda takes away a bit from ther experience. So I'd rather play vanilla

>Implying Into the breach is bad
Not as good as FTL though I give you that.

was i the only one who really enjoyed homm iv
even more than iii ?

>go to my friends place after school
>his mom makes sandwiches
>boot up the old pc
>which one you gonna choose?
>same as usual, dungeon
youtube.com/watch?v=bIYMAuPEiE8

the maps are in big part what made the game feel alive, always full of details and items to collect

tower or dungeon I guess, I dunno. I'l happy to honestly play any town except inferno so I often just random. wish there was a "random but not fuckin inferno" option

Bastion
Dragons are nice

I miss these types of games too, you could really get lost in the map, they were so detailed. Disciples II is another one I play a shit ton olf

It's better, but there's less of it.

How do I take screenshots from HoMM 1?
fraps doesn't work with this DOS game.

yes

The aesthetic of the game is extremely unappealing to me

Money

The future of humanity rests in this 8x8 grid!

heart and soul doesn't make as much money

That has to be the most epic main menu screen anyones ever seen.

>two designers, three lead artists, 23 artists ( source: youtube.com/watch?v=070j8p_aemE )
>probably had enough funds that most of those people were full-time
>one portrait concept artist, one mech concept artist, rest of the art presumably by the two core developers ( source: youtube.com/watch?v=EwN6F1V6wzM )
>first two were probably contractors, likely one of the core developers did art while the other one programmed
Oh gee I wonder why one has detailed sprites while the other leans heavily into a simplistic artstyle

>Why don't devs make games with heart and soul anymore?
Because heart, soul, good art style and good game design doesnt make money.
Loot boxes, stealing assets from other games, microtransactions, p2w and making a bare-bones unfinished product does. That's what investors want so they tell the publisher what they want, publisher tells the devs what to make. Devs are just code-monkeys who are stuck in a 9-5 dead end job trying to pay the rent. They dont give a shit about the game they've been told to code on a deadline.

stop defending indieshit

Both are shit.

Define heart and soul

There's plenty of indie games with soul, like pic related which has been actively developed for 20 years.
The reason why Into the Breach looks soulless is because it's too clean. Heroes III consists of a lot of traced or screenshotted 3D models with shit loads of artifacts from the scaling, pre-rendered lighting, and dithering. That was their attempt at achieving what computers can easily do in real time today, it's the attempt and the ugly portions that give it soul.

Making maps is fun

Attached: ZeMappo.png (1920x1040, 1.59M)

That one looks like Eastern kingdoms, make a XXL map with warcrafts continents?

I just usually make one island and call it a day. Then make a new map next time.
Also, I dunno much about Warcraft. Sorry

based aesthetic poster

>remember spending dozens of hours working on this one XL map back in the day
>lost the computer I had it saved on

>Disciples 2
Impeccable taste.

wtf why would you use one of the best strategy games in recent memory to compare , at least compare it to the newer shitty heroes games
