I'm looking for an MMO that meets some criteria. We have a total of 3 people, including me, looking to share some time in this game. If there are any resources for lists of MMOs that aren't total shit, that will help too.
>no subscription (we can only play on weekends due to work schedule) >isn't grindy as fuck (pic somewhat related but I know private servers exist) >has something that resembles active players
I think a holy-trinity type MMO would be ideal so that it boosts the level of cooperating between us but I am open to suggestions. And feel free to use this thread to shitpost since this is basically /r/ tier.
hope you find a good game user, I'm in the same struggle also I love RO
Jeremiah Miller
huh, same here even RO servers are shit now
Mason Powell
>no subscription >isn't grindy as fuck Pick 1 and only 1. >active players WoW and FFXIV, that's pretty much the entire genre right there.
Parker Sanders
Yeah I realize that you can't have the best of both worlds, but in terms of how grindy something is, we don't want to have to play non-stop for the whole weekend just to get 10% closer to a level up. If the gameplay is good enough, it won't feel like grinding and I think that's the important part. Also, thanks for the bump.
Juan White
Unironically Elder Scrolls Online

It's funny you say that, I was in the middle of messaging my first friend that I came back empty handed and was going to give a brief summary. I was just about to say "I've been hearing good things about ESO here and there and it might be worth it to research" but now that someone suggested it in the thread, I will be sure to. Thank you! Any other suggestions are still welcome and I appreciate each poster.
Elijah Price
I played TESO (I'm not OP) I enjoyed the comfy world but the combat was so fucking atrocious I dropped it (I was a melee dps doing the meta build rotating DOTs)
Ayden Evans
City of Heroes, maybe
Oliver Nelson
I remember reading that they made made some major changes since release. Is that from before or after?
Mason Foster
>I want an mmo >but I dont want to grind >and I also dont have any time to sink in it >but also I want to have a feel for a community >even though I can't get in touch with it since my playtime is severely limited you people fucking disgust me why do you even want an mmo to begin with? just hop on something like Diablo or some session-based trash like CS or LoL or World of Tanks or literally any other game are you really that stupid? what the FUCK is your fucking problem?
Cameron Gonzalez
>no subscription Ah, OSRS has free-to-play servers. >has something that resembles active players Check there too. >Isn't grindy as fuck ...well shit. Can't help ya, op.
Grayson Thomas
Well if you want grinding then there's Maple Story 2, despite all its flaws its still kind of fun for a bit and has a lot of shit you can do. The grinding isn't that bad either. From what I hear(only play the closed beta with boosted exp) the grind isn't that bad and can reach max level pretty quick. There's Tera if you want to do nothing but queue dungeons all day. Blade and Soul, Black Desert, Vindictus haven't played any of these but I see them get brought up a lot.
after release I guess, I played it for the last time a year ago or so when the murkmire exp came out
if they changed that combat thing I complained about I would totally go back to the game also some grindy/limited non-premium things like inventory shit or horse speed
Jaxon Edwards
They like they idea of playing MMOs but don't really want to play them. Retards.
Dylan Moore
What might get you guys is if you like collecting crafting materials. They're going to clog your bank and inventory unless you give them $15/month for ESO+ However they give you crowns with it, so it doesn't feel as jewey as it could be.
Oh no it still feels a little clunky. I'm learning it, but I'm told it opens up and flows at max level (of course).
Daniel Foster
Albion Online almost fits your needs but it's literally nothing but grinding, there's no real quests or stories because it's a sandbox.
Hunter Flores
Oh that sounds interesting. Thanks, user.
Charles Smith
I hate to break it to you user but in your condition it looks like private servers are your best bet
Joshua Williams
The subscription isn't a requirement (though it's definitely a thing you'd want if you play a lot), but you can also easily get it through in-game currency. It gives you more XP and stuff per kill and gives you the ability to purchase and upgrade an island. Basically the game tries to make you buy it at least once. If you have a Subscription you also get 20 Learning Points a day which you can use to level something for only 20% of the XP required instead of 100%. So it's actually beneficial to just have the subscription and you can play whenever.
Robert Hughes
I'm not OP, I'm the guy recommending ESO but I also burn out on MMOs after two months before I hunt another one so it'll be next on my list.
Angel Hernandez
When I said I didn't want something grindy as fuck, I meant it word for word. Some grind is okay. We just wanted a cooperative experience that isn't "Everyone shoot thing until it dies". I chose RO as the OP for the variety of classes because I didn't want to put too many criteria and risk getting 0 replies. We're fine with grind, as you can't have the best of both worlds (F2P with 0 grind). I'm just looking for a balance, something "fair". Maybe a lot of grind is fine, as long as their is some sort of variety. Yeah, I was getting ready to tell him pretty much this. "It's either RO, Tree of Savior, or ESO" but I got a few more suggestions since then so I'll have to go through them. We'll see.
Carter Long
>so that it boosts the level of cooperating between us Play Wakfu. You guys can play the story together and the combat pretty much requires team work to not get destroyed.
Adam Moore
guild wars 2. no sub, active playerbase, and fun to play with friends. it doesn't have much of a holy trinity in the early levels, but at max level it definitely exists. you can more or less ignore the story and just explore the world, it's really nice with friends.
i would also recommend FFXIV but that fits none of your criteria and is complete ass to play with friends (early on). story is mandatory (and good) but definitely not co-op.
Dominic Watson
Wakfu isn't as grindy, is free except for the endgame dungeons, is very atmospheric, but the population is likely around a thousand per server. We all live in guilds though so whatever. I hear the pvp is active but I hate pvp
Grayson Kelly
also forgot to mention that the "free trial" is more or less just the original base game. the expansions are great and add a lot of shit to the base mechanics of the game while still keeping a static max level.
Logan Robinson
You know, I was looking over wikipedia's list of MMOs and passed over the title since I've played it before, but I think I'll give it a fair trial. I remembered having a lot of fun with it in the beta, and I definitely remember having to work together to not get fucked. We'll see what the two of them say. Our third said "I like to shoot things" (normie, so definitely guns) but I will throw the idea their way anyway. Thank you for posting, I was considering FF14 for just myself a few weeks ago but my personal criteria is the same as the OP I wrote so good to know that I resisted all the praise from the general threads.
Easton Miller
Don't fall for the ff14 meme there's nothing of value in that game
Landon Bell
no problem brother. i tried getting one of my friends into ffxiv so we could raid together but it just takes too much goddamn time to catch up. feels more like a mainline ff game than an mmo at times
Luis Ross
Can someone redpill me on Eso? I played on launch and it was a shitfest with missing textures, quest npcs and a plethora of problems. I believe I reached the second region and got to like half of it before I gave up on the game entirely
Brandon Jackson
The problem with shitstory 2 is that I couldn't even create a fucking account
Grayson Adams
It's gotten better. Combat's a little clunky, but I feel it appeals to me as a casual player. Everything is scaled until CP160. I joined a dungeon with other people with only one healing skill and it buffed the fuck out of my healing. Crafting mats is how you make dosh Interesting world with tons of collecting resources I'm playing it at the same time I'm playing SkyrimVR and I honestly like ESO more right now.
Blake Jones
been playing psu on a private server with around 12 friends from a discord server on and off. it's less grindy than vanilla but that means fuck all when you have upwards of 20+ skills to level individually
Ian Reed
SWTOR. It's good, fuck the haters.
You should pay for the sub though. It's not really F2P. F2P makes it more grindy. You can dip your feet for free though.
Just tell your normie friend to get a ranged class like foggernaut Press keys, napalm shit while sitting on a comfy chair
Angel Watson
Is it Clementine? I've been inactive in their discord server for quite some time, I'm waiting until they get all of the bosses up and running again before suggesting it to anyone else. If there is another private server that's further along development, definitely let me know.
Logan Moore
Alive and well, new x-pac coming soon, KOTFE story is completed. Game is great.
William Scott
Here's a wild card, fuck everything and play mabinogi.
Ye it's Clementine I can't speak to how many missions are up and running because I'm not familiar with all the content, but we've been playing with a fair variety of missions. As for bosses, I think there are two or three that don't work, and for the missions attached to them you can't access them in the first place. The project if I heard right is just a single dude and two coders, so progress can be slow going but we just got a patch a few days ago. Either way, playing with some friends is a good time. All right fucko, sell me. How is it current year? How much grinding am I looking at? I like Mabinogi, don't get me wrong, but I have no fucking idea what I'm doing when I hop in.
Julian Sanchez
just play Diablo and fuck off retard
Nathaniel Wilson
I've never played any of the Diablo games, but I will definitely look into it. All I know is that it shares the same camera as the original Fallout games. And the cow level.
Landon Martin
Just play the original PSO, that is fun as fuck
Hudson Edwards
That's not a bad idea either. I don't know if BlueBurst is considered the original, but I remember I didn't like BB that much. However, that must be upwards to 10 years ago so maybe I'll like it now.
Daniel Bell
mabi has a mixture of both super easy to rank skills and ungodly grind skills, but the newest and arguably best skills are far easier to train. Server merge soon as well so players are starting to come back to check things out again
Diablo games are ARPGs not MMOs, ignore that user 2 is good if you don't mind it being old, 3 is a casualfest and way inferior to 2 but is modern and okay for casual play, but I doubt diablo games will fulfill your MMO desires
also the original PSO was a fucking good game with an awesome OST, but again it's an old game that you can only play in private servers with not too many people, and grinding for good items is pointless
Michael Cruz
>How is it current year? Pretty dead like most non WoW/FFXIV mmo's. But the was or is a server merge so its not TOO dead. >How much grinding am I looking at? The only grind is leveling your skills and even then, the requirements to level them changes up each time you level your skill so in a sense you're always doing something different. >but I have no fucking idea what I'm doing when I hop in. Whatever the fuck you want, best thing about mabinogi is its not a treadmill mmo and you can move at your own pace so no rat race to max level. If you really don't know what your doing or what to do, get all your talents to expert by leveling enough skills to reach expert level(Gold title). You gain about 200-300 and something AP each time you expert a talent. Once you experted a talent, rebirth your character(don't reset your levels) into another talent inorder to get a small skill exp boost for rebirthing into that talent and reset your skills by talking to Duncan NPC and repeat until you've tried out all the talents.
This is a great way to play around with and experiment with all the classes mabinogi has and build up a lot of AP since some talents require a large amount of AP which prevents you from leveling every skill within that talent. Of course you could just level up normally and gain 1 AP per level or do generation quests for loads of AP but where's the fun in not trying out different classes? The more skills you learn early the more the game really opens up to you, especially life skills and the more AP you build up the more you can start using skills from different talents and mix and matching different combinations. By end game or high level you'll pretty much have enough AP to max every skill but you can do this pretty early on which is nice
