VR hasn't failed quite yet.
The issue is that it's been having a really fuckin hard time getting off the ground until very recently. It needs to build a player base until we get more fully realized AAA games.
Now that hardware is finally getting cheap, I think it's really gonna go somewhere soon.

The best balanced multiplayer game of all time, Dota 2, came out in this decade.
Gamecube emulation reached an incredible level and ease of use.
Mario 64 romhacks exploded in quality, quantity and popularity.
Age of Empires II was re-released on Steam, making that franchise live again.
Finally party games for PC started appearing, making local PC multiplayer a viable way to spend an evening with friends.
Grand Strategy games saw amazing releases like Crusader Kings II.
Platinum Games came back from the brink of death.
Motion controls were gloriously forgotten.
Chinese knockoff consoles made it easy and affordable to have a portable emulator for gameboy or old consoles.
Devil May Cry came back from the dead.
Minecraft was released.
Excellent new releases for many important franchises, like Tetris and Nier.
Spectacular failures of high profile trashware from EA and Ubisoft.

You could prob count the number of people who meet that condition here on one hand.
