Most of their fights end mutually, the only times Sonic has ever definitively won were in the very beginning of Sonic Battle (Shadow got his ass kicked by something else prior and couldn't fight very well against Sonic) and Sonic Generations.

In games like SA2, Heroes, or the Rivals games, it's treated mutually because the story has to account for whether or not the player is playing as Sonic or if they're playing as Shadow.

Nah, Shadow just probably beat him and then returned to the Ark. The cannon is functional in the last story and Eggman uses the last emerald he got from Tails on the Cannon. Since those same emeralds were used by the Biolizard and Super Sonic and Shadow, it only makes sense that the Dark Side ending is the true ending.

He's been a boss (Generations) and a playable character (Forces). He's nowhere near the same level as irrelevant as the other characters where the most action they've gotten was a support character in one of Generations side missions.

I disagree. Shadow's a perfect fit for Sonic's main rival since he is like a photo negative of Sonic himself.

Shadow's quieter, more openly pragmatic in how he does business, not much a fan of trying to make friends, but cares deeply for the few friends he accepts into his life, far more outwardly introspective when compared to Sonic's tendency to hide such traits aside instances like the end of Adventure 2 where Sonic purely muses on the nature of life alone before immediately jumping back to his happy go lucky persona when Amy asks what's up.

Compared to Knuckles or Blaze who are more of an antithesis to Sonic, Shadow fits the role of a rival who is a complement and alternative image of Sonic himself.

Though the series isn't typically well written, this kind of comparison is pretty clearly expressed in how these respective characters are portrayed in SA2, 06, Unleashed, and especially in how Sonic handles the end fight of Sonic Battle when he realizes he has to kill Emerl.

And it's one of the aspects of the Sonic franchise that I'd consider to be consistently pretty engaging in spite of the franchise's regular dive into incompetent writing.

The ARK is damaged in ShtH but still intact as evident by all the debris. This is pretty much the same result as the hero ending.

I really doubt Shadow would risk Sonic getting away like that considering he was on a single minded revenge quest for Maria and wouldn't want anything to be a thorn in his side later on.

That's only in the Hero ending. The True ending of the game doesn't show that and the fact that the canon is still intact in Shadow the Hedgehog shows Sonic didn't destroy it.

Not what happened at all. Sonic loses to Emerl earlier on in the story, but later says he was holding back. He then loses to Emerl with Shadow as his backup. Sonic beating Emerl who had more power than Eggman's starcluster destroyer was massive plot bullshit. They don't even try to explain how it worked.

They do explain it. Emerl's body was terminating itself by breaking protocol along with the energy absorbed. Sonic didn't have to beat Emerl, Emerl would have destroyed himself. Sonic just had to damage him enough to speed the process.

Quote it. Because I'll tell you he doesn't. Sonic fought Emerl a bunch of times. Right at the end of Shadow's story, Emerl has to beat everyone before fighting Shadow, including Sonic. There Sonic says he wasn't trying his hardest after losing. He tells Emerl to fight the others and then he'd fight seriously. He tagteams Emerl with Shadow and loses regardless.

You must have some ridiculous concept of Sonic's powerlevel if you think he in base could naturally take down someone who shits on star destroyers. Sonic always needs chaos emeralds for that.
