This is why his breakdown in court was great, in his own twisted way he was actually genuinely happy that Wright and Edgeworth defeated him, because it meant there was still hope for true justice in the world

The law is not perfect and cannot deliver justice perfectly. As result many criminals avoid justice just because they "don't have enough evidence", this fact drove the guy nuts and he started to use illegal means to punish evil people that could avoid the law.

Perhaps this wasn't made obivious enough for you but Rise From The Ashes wasn't in PW:AA originally. It was a bonus episode used to highlight the power of the DS. You probably noticed how some sprites looked more vibrant/alive
