as said, everyone hated d/p because they were SLOW AS FUCK and completely departed in feel from previous games.
Even platinum is overlooked despite fixing all the speed issues and actually being a good game.
Gen 4 had the opposite effect on me, I didn't pick up a real Pokemon game again until Pokemon Go convinced me to try out X/Y.

pokemania died with gen 2, and gen 3 was no where near dead numbers. Gen 5 is what scared the shit out of gamefreak and left us with the shitstains that are gen 6-8

obviously if you go on your gen 4 OST vids it's going to be nostalgiafags jerking off to whatever. Gen 4 was a mess, platinum bandaided some shit but still had a lot of problems like garbage region, HM, and speed. Gen 4 is largely liked due to HG/SS
D/P/Pl also under-performed, only reason they sold more than gen 3 was the DS selling double that of the GBA (despite this D/P/Pl barely sold more than R/S/E)

sinnoh is trash, don't let the nostalgiatards tell you otherwise. The only good thing is the post game of platinum which is an inferior version of Emerald's anyway.
A small list of some problems with gen 4:
-speed. Battles take way too long due to shit like long weather effects or slow HP bar drain. This is especially bad in gen 4 since blissy was so prominent online.
-garbage region. Only variation in the main game is snow and swamp, both of which are terrible and slow down the gameplay even more. All environmental diversity was crampt in post game
-worst HM usage in the series
-lol mt. coronett
-horrid pokemon distribution, platinum fixed it a bit but it was still shit
-contest and battle frontier were shittier than gen 3's
-horrid legendary bloat with most of them having shit designs
-bunch of babymon and disgusting cross evo designs, along with the previous bullet point, give sinnoh the worst pokedex in the series

I always thought Gen 4 was kind of forgettable and the games felt weird.
