Eh, there have been upsurges in theads that try to coast by on saying they're Vidya related while not actually having any discussion about the games themselves.

First of all, the movie trims the subplots for time, there are fewer roadblocks, henchmen and red herrings. The characters of Lucy Stevens and detective Yoshida have different names in the game (Emilia Christie and Mike Baker). As for actual plot differences: there is no Howard Clifford. The villain in the game really is Roger Clifford and he makes and spreads R for money and control while using his influence as head of the CNM to hide the story. In the movie he is of course a red herring and his father is the real villain. Then there are differences in some of the characters and Pokémon featured and the order of events, still generally to trim the lenght of the overall plot. For instance in the game,Tim investigates the PCL much earlier and it's still populated with scientists (unaware of the fact R was being produced there), while in the movie it's been abandoned. The whole plan of merging humans and Pokémon is also original to the movie since it relies on the new villain, and even the resolution of Harry and Pikachu's storyline is original. At the end of the game, Mewtwo leaves without outright telling Tim that Harry's mind is inside Pikachu, although Pikachu appears to know.

A lot of designs were used in the backgrounds, probably makes it super easy to reuse since they're making more movies
