The film's been in development for quite a while, I wouldn't be surprised if not many of the Alolan region designs were finalized yet. And also fuck off, the fact it wasn't all starters and shillmons was cool.

It was pretty good, all things considered. They absolutely nailed the two most important aspects of the movie, that being the worldbuilding and the relationship between Tim and Pikachu. Also the movie using retro techniques and making the Pokemon appear as if they're animatronics/made using practical effects was genius.

My only real issue was the pacing. It's lightning fast, which completely contradicts noir in general and doesn't do the movie any favors. It really needed some more scenes where the movie just sows down so the audience can take in the sights.

Overall though, definitely worth a watch.

You really don't need to know much about Pokemon just to follow the movie though. They make sure to go into detail to explain the Pokemon that are actually plot important, every other Pokemon are just animals.

Yeah, there's lots of little details you'll miss if you're not a fan, but as far as following the core plot of the film, anyone will be fine if they pay attention.

It was cute, i had fun. It's biggest problem is that the plot development is real silly, their idea of a detective movie was basically to hit you with a twist every couple of minutes. It was almost like the structure of a TV show except super-condensed, so every time an "episode" ends with a mysterious cliffhanger a character conveniently walks in to solve it, or Pikachu stumbles on a clue by chance

Saw it with my gf, she knows barely anything pokemon but finds Pikachu cute, she started playing pokemon go a couple weeks before.

Play gen 5 instead, specifically Black and White 2. While the designs in general aren't all that great, the content the game offers is one of the largest of any game in the series.

The kids in the row in front of me were adorable in their excitement for Sonic and Eggman.

I personally found it fantastic, but part of me thinks it was just the novelty of seeing the POKEMON IN THE REAL WORLD :D aspect that we used to have as children finally come to fruition. I fear that if future iterations don't have decent writing/acting, just seeing the Pokemon dancing around and shit will not be nearly as compelling. I'm also pissed that it's getting a sequel. The narrative came together and it seemed like case closed, so i don't see why we should be getting a Detective Pikachu 2 when the aforementioned novelty won't be enough to save it anymore. I hope the sequel becomes another adaptation. Pokemon Conquest would be the best fucking film ever, holy shit.

Overall it was an okay movie. A lot of scenes have basic 3d models in space mistakes. Notably i think i remember the machamp crossing guard having no shadow. Shit like that, a lot of Pokemon dont look grounded in scenes. But based golurk gets multiple shots so that's a plus.
