It wasn't.
Because it's a 10/10 game in pretty much every aspect except combat which is awful, kind of a problem considering how half of the game is combat. It's a game that most people WANT to love but it's relegated to being a flawed gem.
It would be great to see a remake or something on the same vein, but everyone knows nuSquare would just fuck up horribly.
Yeah, I can understand that. Honestly I was never a fan of the combat in other Mana games, so the repetitive combat in Legend of Mana was something I just shrugged off. The fact that you could just breeze through it was a positive. The boss battles had a lot of emotional weight as well, so that helped a lot.
Still, the story and the overall feel of the game is so unique and unmatched to this day it's sad not only players but devs don't look back to it. I was happy as hell when I saw that "Eternal Senia" took inspiration from it.
Frankly a remake sounds like a bad idea for me, unless they still have the original sketches from years ago (I could be wrong but just rescaling it would look like shit). I wish they would only enable the PS1 Classics for ps4. Can't understand why they don't do that.
I'd would love if SE remade it Vanillaware style, keeping the gorgeous visuals and art designs while adding proper online with seamless multiplayer coop and pvp.
I managed to find people with their own file to coop and pvp with nearby but mostly just resorted to my friend using the follower NPC.
It's a nice game. Got its problems, but I like it.
last thread we had said there were some game boy advance games from the same company.
This. Though to be honest, I've found every Mana game to have really braindead combat so I don't think LoM particularly stands out in that way. At least it has the story and atmosphere to make up for it.
Also it was ignored because most people played it for 30 minutes and gave up because it didn't tell them where to go, unlike 99% of JRPGs.
combat being trash ruins the game
Too artsy, even for its time, and too little gameplay depth.
If it pulled back on either of these, it'd be considered a Valkyrie Profile tier classic today.
>too little gameplay depth
>outside of the one autist they hired to design blacksmithing and never checked on him outside of "is it finished?"
Oh yeah? Any that really stand out?
Duba Dubababa Ba Da! Dub?
sorry friend ive forgotten already. there were 2 of them.
Finally got around to playing this game a couple of years ago and loved every fucking second of it. It's literally brimming with quality content from start to finish and never loses steam.
Not even sure why people shit on the combat so much. Considering how simplistic it is I think they did a pretty decent job of it. They've even got an interesting (if not pretty much useless) PvP system.
>Also it was ignored because most people played it for 30 minutes and gave up because it didn't tell them where to go, unlike 99% of JRPGs.
Yeah, that's the bulk of complaints I hear about it, but damn, that was one of my favourite aspects of the game. I loved how each playthrough gave me something new I wasn't aware of before. Playing the game blind is one ofthe comfiest experiences I ever had.
That scene is so fucking great.
Sword of Mana, Magical Vacation and Mother 3. Didn't like Sword of Mana, still gotta play Magical Vacation (looks pretty good, though). Don't need to say anything about the latter I guess.
I just dislike the combat due to it being braindead easy. Legend of Mana is easily one of the most soulful games i've played otherwise.
It's a great game, but people at the time didn't care for how disjointed the story(stories?) was.
There is one good Mana game: Secret of Mana/SD2.
The rest are unplayable shit. One game series.
I beat this game when I was 13 and don't remember anything about it so it must not be that great.
Unbelievably shit taste. SD3 and LoM are both way better than SoM.
The combat gets a bit repetitive and annoying sometimes (especially when backtracking), but was never that bad for me.
And yeah, LoM has one of the finest atmospheres I've ever seen in a game. The story is great even in its rather incomplete state, it's full of whimsical and weird characters, and the art and soundtrack are just perfect. Even though it's impossible I really wish we could have an HD remaster of it.
I honestly never managed to see the appeal in Secret of Mana.
I find 95% of games to be braindead easy, but it never made me like LoM any less. It's still very fun.
Sierra is a good girl. Say something nice about her.
>remember a teen dream where I married her
>mfw not real
music and that scene kino indeed.
Gak!
>there are people who didn't get the Succubus pet
Also I absolutely love the intro music
She seems like a capable warrior. I'd be happy to go on adventures with her.
Bunch of advanced systems that serve no purpose because the game is really fucking easy.
Is children of mana (the ds one) good?
no
I never managed to beat the game so I'm glad the Legend of Mana manga existed, Toto a cute and a best.
The mangaka had so much potential. I can't believe he used his skills to make kingdom hearts manga for 2 decades. Fuck.
It's not awful at first, until you discover you can craft an absolute OP instrument that kills everything.
Fuck demons and fuck demonic people!
Is it really that bad?
yes
The only two games worth a shit on Seiken Densetsu 3 and Legend of Mana. Everything else is garbage colored by nostalgia.
Best dragon companion.
Yeah, the manga is great. It's kind of a relief considering the author other works.
LoM is one of the few games where the world actually feels alive and like it doesn't revolve around you
Escad's a weenie that couldn't win a fight to save his life, so he just attacks people out of the blue and hopes that does the trick.
By instruments you mean weapons, right?
Instruments can't be tempered, their strength doesn't get any better after the initial forge.
Meanwhile weapons can bump your ATK by 500 or even 999 points, while monsters and golems have the 200 ATK cap, allies can't change weapons, and even the best instrument doesn't hit 100 ATK.
Tempered weapons trivializes every mechanism.
> 3/3 common
> 4/4 uncommon
sorry, it's canon that escad is the right choice
Yeah, the fact that the world is populated by a limited cast all with distinct behaviours and not just carbon copies and john does really does the trick. I wish more games did that. Even just tertiary characters like the Lilipeas and the Wind Callers are remarkable af.
Man, I really liked what the manga did to Escad.
What's that?
pretty much every game in the 90s needed a trading card game
Dragoon, not dragon. Sierra and Larc are wuffs.
The problem for me was that the game offered practically no information on how the crafting systems work, and even after reading FAQs on the subject I was still completely confused. So rather than figuring anything out on my own, I just followed the most OP crafting directions I could find.
And there's like a dozen systems in this game that follow this same train of thought, from raising pets to choosing where to place the next area. Sure, it offers a lot of options for replaying the game, but I'm not nearly autistic enough to keep replaying the game to figure all of that out.
>that online phone game sequel to LoM that we never got
Worst is the Golem shit. The amount of resources and cash it requires isn't worth it.
this
though calling it good is still a stretch
Junk rare, user. He's a weenie that got mad when Matilda decided she liked guys with hairy chests.
...whoa, that's nice. can't even find anything about it anywhere lol where did you get it?
Seriously?
I played this back in the day and the combat was the only redeeming thing about it. You run around all these towns talking to people for literal hours and finally you get some combat area to place on the map and actually play a game instead of a glorified text adventure.
The combat was simplistic as hell, but it fun enough and had lots of weapons and cool looking attacks. And the enemy sprites looked awesome.
ebay many years ago
now you have to find them on japanese auction sites
there is barely any information around
and now there might be even less because Japanese geocities ended

>LoM thread

Holy shit did I go to bizarro world Yea Forums?
Yes, actually. Tomorrow morning, you'll meet a quintet of kangaroo martial artists who will help teach you the meaning of personal courage.
>tfw figuring out the dudbear language back in the day with no help made me feel like i was a genius.
I miss simple pleasures like this.
>most people played it for 30 minutes and gave up because it didn't tell them where to go, unlike 99% of JRPGs.
As much as I like the game (actually replaying it right now) I have to say it's one of the most deliberately obtuse games I can remember. And not in a good, letting-you-figure-things-yourself kind of way, but more like a "we're trying really hard to shill the strategy guide" kind of way.
I mean, some levels have convoluted layouts with a bunch of nearly identical screens that loop back on each other and there's no map. Even if you manage to figure out who to talk to to initiate an event your goal is often unclear. Your diary is basically useless as a reminder. You can lock yourself out of events by accident with no warning. There is absolutely no way to understand the infusion mechanics by simple trial and error, I don't give a fuck what anyone says. It's a beautiful game and has some really fun components but holy shit was it made by a bunch of autists.
Unfortunelly it get repetitive soon as you get some more complexo area and need to explore or find something specific. You end up fighting again and again with enemys that dont represent any threat and all you have to do is smash atack button again and again. OST, art style and storytelling are something else thoug
Eh, that's sad. So there isn't even anywhere with the complete deck? Could you share the pics you have of yours at least? I would be grateful, I really like just saving stuff about the game.
I hardly understood english the first time I played and spent an hour of trial and error talking with autistic dudbears.
Man, I sure miss those times.
WHAT IS THIS
I've got all the cards, but haven't had time to devote to documenting it all
if you pick some of your favorite characters/monsters/items I'll scan a few
You sound like a zoomer
>I wish they would only enable the PS1 Classics for ps4.
Wait, can you not play ps1 classics on the ps4?
LoM has a perfect implementation of multiplayer. Drop-in for casual play, co-op with save file characters for dedicated gaming, and just hidden enough to make you feel like a champ for discovering it or knowing about it.
It's only ignored irl
People love that game online
Thanks for that, really. I'll pick in order of preference so you can scan how many you feel like.
Duelle
Blackpearl
Nicollo
Rachel
Olbohn
Pokiehl
Selva
Matilda (young)
Belle
Lilipeas
Heh. I got terrible news for you.
Yeah, it has a rather decent following online, but I still rarely see people talking about it.
PS4 is in the Enhanced/Streaming/HD-release generation. So they can't go around letting you just play games you already bought (again) last gen.
I need more of that
I remember I played it with my little brother and having to swap characters really discouraged him to keep playing the game with me. He obviously wanted his own guy to level up and customize.
Damn just noticed it's been 20 years.
I remember that movie :)
>swedish opening song
>never got a swedish release
I remember being frustrated at this as a kid.
>know Swedish
>opening song sounds retarded if you know what it says
lol don't spoil it for yourselves if you don't know it's better if it keeps its magic
no duelle or rachel card
matilda only has a young card, and she's a playable character (player cards have different backs)
olbohn is one of the rarest from what I've figured out
I threw in a Nunuzac because I figured you'd appreciate seeing a better view of him, the colors are wrong on all the scanned photos of him online
my scanner is pretty bad
Is there one for that gorgon teacher from Geo?
Don't mind me, just posting the best tracks of the game:
youtube.com
Pokiehl is a faggot and should mercy kill all the junkyard toys that can't be saved
>>opening song sounds retarded if you know what it says
Eh. It's nothing too deep or anything, but it's a rather simple song about a journey and the passage of time, with the emotions tied to said journey. It's pretty good still.
didn't really impress me much
sounded way too vacuous but that's personal taste talking
still sounds great
whoops duelle was there
some other characters you don't see much of
whoops again
I found it pretty sad, poor tree.
forgot to mention the holofoils have huge printing problems, see the vertical line on elle there
based dog god
based thread anons. before we all part you anons are awesome. til the next LoM thread !
Poor Duelle lol I always wondered if him and Olbohn are of the same race.
Yeah, thanks for that, Nunuzac was one of my pics besides those. I always found his character intriguing. I wish the other teachers of Geo had more backstory as well.
s'okay, really appreciate it. Never noticed how nice the Succubus looks.
City of Flickering Destruction is one of my favourite videogame tracks ever. I really like Distant Truth as well.
but user you can't leave
we haven't even talked about the zippo lighters or picture frame yet
My wife! Goddess bless you.
thanks for recommending eternal senia. just found it.
i really like the home town domina orchestral version. so fucking magical on good speakers.
based. thanks for showing and telling nibba.
I'd like to imagine a japan salary man lighting up a cigarette using one of those. Those are all awesome btw, I'd love to have the picture frame. I bet they're extremely rare.
...ok, now that was unexpected.
Hometown Domina is beautiful no matter how and who is played:
the salary man would also need the official legend of mana business card holder
I'm not even joking, that's what this is
page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp
here is a frame for about 100 dollars more than I spent on mine
>for those who wanna know this language, that is created by the singer, so it really doesnt exsit in this world, but it sounds like it does.
Damn, that's amazing. Reminds me of that song from Made in Abyss. Really loved that version.
god damn im going to look for this random jap youtube channel who did a whole remixed jazz like album of LoM.
so much talent out there and we cant understand or talk to those nibbas.
can you get a closeup of the protagonist's face on that frame?
imagine s_x with her hahaha
never mind shimomura actually did it. thought it was another jap since it was low views and low subs.
he's uh
seen things...
oof
dawmn, there's even a jigsaw puzzle
page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp
And I thought the biggest piece of LoM merch was that edition with the Elazul and Pearl figurines.
speaking of
that puzzle is basically a glorified magnet set, the real neat part is the magnet calendar that works for any year
is Nicollo grabbing his butt
btw thanks for these pics.
Lucky bastard. Thanks though, it's the best pic I've seen of the figures
weird to think this came out in 1999, the style is so timeless it seems more like a mid/late 2000s game
bit better photo
and it plays music
vocaroo.com
>the style is so timeless it seems more like a mid/late 2000s game
??????????????????????
Funny how FF9 is accused of furry shit when there is plenty right here.
I think those who hate FF9 just hate its popularity.
So has anyone beaten this game where they got all possible outcomes? Is there a secret final boss or ending when going through all possible stories?
Man, that's good. Extremely Jelly
whoa, thanks for that. had no idea it was a music box. more stuff for my mana folder.
Yeah, this game has not aged at all imo.
I don't think anyone really cares about that. FF9 is a game I really need to play btw. Also, I think the animal characters of LoM really adds to the whimsical feel of the game.
it's just the 3 main arcs, and they all conclude with placing the Mana Tree
and who could forget the official legend of mana battery and screwdriver set
Could you guys recommend any other co-op JRPGs that are actually full co-op? Like I know a lot of the Tales games let a friend join in during combat, but then they just feel completely irrelevant during the rest of the game.
Honest jelly for those lighters.
Secret of Mana has coop, and pretty sure Seiken Densetsu 3 also does
fucking penguins activating my almonds like that on their quests.
you gotta have the screw driver and battery if you want to play Ring Ring Land on your playstation pocket or whatever this thing is called
oh so 3 main arcs dont make a 4th? miss opportunity there
>I don't think anyone really cares about that. FF9 is a game I really need to play btw. Also, I think the animal characters of LoM really adds to the whimsical feel of the game.
Give it a try then, because if that's what you felt from LoM then you will get the same with FF9.
dang
I wanted this game so much when I was younger because I loved SoM and SD3, but didn't have a playstation. Finally got an emulator of it years, and years later. Just can't get into it. Every time I place something on the map I'm sure I placed it poorly. Just kind of gave up on it a couple hours in.
I want to like it, but can't get into it. I wish I had played it as a kid instead.
BTW is it true that you can get both the penguin AND her baby to live in your home by cracking all crabs in the beach? Anyone ever managed to do that? I got her but gave up on the rest of the crabs and didn't get to see it in my last playthrough.
here is my pet chobin hood standing on what I guess is gato grottoes, hard to say
he got into a fight with a chibi devil and lost
no free items for me
it's not a very minmaxy game, you can beat it easily no matter what you do. The tedium is in some of the sidequests that involve a lot of talking and running around.
i mean i saw a bunch of screenshots and youtube vids so i guess so.
internet says it's true, though I've never done it
Yeah, I never played a lot of FF games, only 7 and a bit of Tactics, but I want to play 9 because it's a friend's favourite game and 12 because of Vagrant Story (I know there's no relation but I just find the idea of Valendia fascinating).
Yeah, I think it certainly helped that I played it as a kid and was as fascinated with it as I think kids were fascinated with Narnia.
There's no such thing as "placing it poorly", though. There are no big relevant changes in the game unless you're a completionist. Just go with the flow, it's the best way to go with this game.
Damn, I'm really glad I created this thread. Had no idea that thing existed either.
Really? Do you have any of those screenshots/videos? I honestly never found any, so I thought the guy was just mistaken.
here is a guide for ring ring land by the way
gamefaqs.gamespot.com
Where did he come from, where did he go
ahem
fuck the wisdoms
Youtube search bar dude.
oh someone made it work on the english game rom
youtube.com
neat
what was their deal, anyway? Just to act haughty while the lands went to shit, then send in the mortal protag for a cleanup job?
I think they all took a course on Philosophy and figured their status and power COULD change the world, but as just a small group of people it wouldn't be kosher to just take the reigns and drive everyone under their beliefs
so they instead took an ambient role, dispensing """"""WISDOM"""""" or becoming guardians of specific places
>Vagrant Story (I know there's no relation but I just find the idea of Valendia fascinating).
people will chastise me for saying this but I never got in to Vagrent Story, I didnt like that the game was limited to one place.
Their roles were supposed to be bigger (especially Tote and Rosiotti, who felt completely useless) but as a whole lot of games, things were left unfinished. The entire World History encyclopedia was supposed to have relevance in the actual game.
Also, you're not really just a mortal dude. The game's story is hazy about your role, but if we take the manga into account you're literally the one responsible to bring the land back to life with tour own thoughts -- the chosen one, if you may.
it didn't age very well, but it's a little like a Kojima game in that it's very cinematic and atmospheric. Matsuno was a very talented director, even though it's easy to see where he ran out of budget.
Well that's good to know. Maybe I'll pick it back up again some day. I have quite enjoyed the music, and it's always nice to see a comfy thread like this.
Only tangentially related, but I've been obsessed with Kenshi lately, and in my current playthrough I've started a squad and have created a spearwoman named Lise, and a heavy swordsman named Durran. I've created Angela, but I'm not really sure what to make of her yet, since there is no magic. I'm thinking a crossbow with a 1 handed club of some sort. I haven't made any of the others yet, but I'm going to make a martial artist named kevin, and a thief with 1 handed katanas as hawk. Carlie is going to be a medic, and I'll probably just do a crossbow and a club for her as well, and her character creation will be all the sliders set to minimum.
I figure none of you know of the game, or care, but wanted to share that with someone who actually knows what SD3 is.
my grandpa had a junk yard on his property out in the middle of nowhere
used to explore around and rummage for pipes to make into swords and trinkets to make into amulets, inspired by legend of mana
the junkyard is still there but grandpa isn't
so the director is the same for ff13 or what's the link to 12 and vangrat story?
I'd love an open world game like breath of the wild with legend of mana's world building
Yeah, it feels limited, I usually like RPGs because of the sense of exploration, but the gameplay is so fun and the story so interesting I ended up really liking it.
Vagrant Story and FF Tactics and XII all happens in the same world, and are also directed by the same person yeah.
I dropped it when I got to the weird translating part.
I've been playing the Zelda games lately exactly because they remind me a bit of Legend of Mana, especially The Minish Cap. Haven't got around to BotW though, but it looks good too.
It's nice to hear something like that because LoM honestly has a big impact on other things I do as well, so it's nice seeing someone likeminded. I didn't know Kenshi but I got interested in it, thanks for that.
such is the fate of junkyards and of people
Eh, I lost my grandpa last year and it's still haunting me a bit. At least you got some good memories.
>Vagrant Story and FF Tactics and XII all happens in the same world, and are also directed by the same person yeah.
FF tactics advanced you mean or is the original the same world?
Both of them actually, but I don't remember if it's the same director for Advance.
they had the same races in that series from 12
goodnight anons
>always get 1/4 of the way through this game, stop playing it for months, then try again, usually get to the same point I did before, and stop once more
I've always tried to beat this game, and it's nice and relaxing, but I can never bring myself to go through the whole thing. I don't know if it's just the general combat being repetitive or what. Shame because the general art style and music are great.
Because it's on PS, and there's a long list of famous jrpgs that overshadow something that is "just good".
Enjoy your Alzheimer's
Probably the only game to handle suicide correctly.
Tree of Savior actually inspired by this and actually able to kinda pull out the artstyle
Too bad it's a shitty fucking gook MMO
Did the same thing on a recent playthrough
Jumi>>>>>>Dragons>>>>>>>>>>shit>Fairies
Never played this series but it looks nice. Holy shit what a blessed thread btw. Props to collectanon with all the rare merch sharing pics.
This and SO2 were my PS1 JRPG jams.
There's no hint on which relic to place to where for certain stories to flow.
I prefer her brother.
That's OK user so does she :3c
If you are still here LoM bro, can you scan Pearl and Black Pearl cards?
It's not surprising considering who produced the game and helped out with the development.
SaGa games are the same and Legend of Mana is half Mana half SaGa.
what
tree of savior is ragnarok online through and through
there's nothing legend of mana about 3d fields/backgrounds
I learned like 15 years later that Elazul has a crystal arm and that his outfit is actually pretty fucking stupid
this game had many cute girls, why it's 95% of the porn just sierra
if you want something inspired by legend of mana then look at Egglia, though it suffers from 1) being a mobile game and 2) being 3D, which kind of detracts from it visually, though the art is nice.
In it you're a redcap (a kind of super shitty violent goblin) that had your horns broken and have no memories so you're actually not shitty. It basically involves forestkin like Goblins and Fairies while having a world system like Legend of Mana's by using Eggs to recreate the world
Too good for Yea Forums. They mostly like basic shit like skyrim.
Aren't they like literal angels of the Goddess? But after some kind of war that they participated in everyone almost died and they basically said to let's not do that again. So instead they took mortal forms and sat on their asses to dispense some fortune cookie bullshit to those who are willing to listen. I think that's the gist of it if I remember what is written in the books in your house.
Manga is honestly fun as fuck and the art is great. It's amazing this game had a finished manga run at all, let alone an actual good one, loved all the characters interactions specially the ones with secondary and minor roles
Its honestly my favorite JRPG of all time, I even enjoyed the combat. There's just this endless sense of adventure and discovery that no other jrpg has ever managed to have. Every zone has its own story and figuring it out is half the fun. Fuck now I wanna play through it again.
good but obscure game. not must play game but if you are a hardcore gamer should play it. i think its a bit too sophisticated for those hipsters who like retro feels.
Maybe the same reason why 95% of Mana 3's porn is just Riesz/Lise, her design is pretty nice and some dude made a shitload of good fan art of her, other people saw all those nice pictures and fell in love with her design too.
Or so I heard, at least. Maybe the "kemono" community in Japan just fell in love with her at first sight.
Post more Sierra
