He only started talking to her to use her status as a reporter as an insurance policy if people at his job caught onto him doing shady shit or something. Kinda of tragic. That made him the best though, he truly cared about Dana more than the original.

It's been a long time since I played but isn't Mercer dropping the vial that started it all shown inside the first hour? At least, it establishes that Ground Zero was a train station and not any sort of laboratory, which makes Mercer's infection incredibly suspicious from the outset. Redlight is the primary virus in Greene, but she produces "hundreds of new strains a day". Dr.Mercer took one of those strains and modified it into Blacklight.

According to 1, Redlight itself is a mutation of Carnival 2, an attempt at a super soldier serum. But 2 retconned it into a biological weapon that targets specific races.

PARIAH was something else due to being infected with Redlight while in the womb and also due to some genetic quirk that the scientists couldn't understand. The first game states that whatever it is that made Virus!Mercer stomp about, it would bring about the apocalypse should Mercer come into contact with Pariah.
The second game iirc states that there's also some gene that turns people into "Prototypes", different from Mercer's Evolved and different from the Runners, which is probably why Mercer wants Heller's daughter, believing that she inherited Heller's gene that turned him into a Prototype.
I guess Prototype gene + Pariah gene = apocalypse

Heller comes across as an abject psychopath, more than Alex (since Alex isn't actually human; was this retconned for heller?). Let's recap on how frequently Heller describes what a big part of his self-concept being in the Army was/is.

It takes him less than ten minutes to start killing his supposed brothers in uniform without even Mercer's mad quest for vengeance as an excuse, more that they were in his way and he didn't like that.

It's about as moving a depiction of a soldier's mind as 50 Cent's Blood in the Sand, which is to say it's a cartoonish and nihilistic idea that it all boils down to shooting guns and wearin' camo. Mercer had that cliche, amnesiac, revenge thing, but Heller?

It's established that the virus preserves all the memories of the people it consumes. Since Mercer was the first one it consumed it "thought" it was Mercer since it only had Mercer's memories to give context to its own existence.

I'm still fantasizing about the devs suicide-marketing a Prototype 3 under the guise of having Heller as a protagonist, only for Mercer to come out and absorb him at the end of the tutorial.

The evolved were an improvement to humans and should have won. Dumb is what 2's Mercer is. He turns Heller and then leaves him be to fuck shit up, including his plans. And only tries to explain what he's trying to do at the end.

He is Mercer at first but gradually change as he grow and become "himself" as he uncover the truth.

When I first played, really early in the game a little after you first start absorbing people's memories, I thought that it would have been really cool if you just were the virus, and only thought you were the first guy you absorbed, but figured that was too cool of a concept for this game. I was quite pleased with the game later when it turned out that was the case, and rather pleased with myself that I figured it out as early as I did.
I really don't rate the game all that highly, but I do give it credit for having such a cool concept, and twist.

The first game had its 10th anniversary recently, and some youtuber made an hour or two long retrospective of the two games.

The virus has Mercer's memories (hence why one of the first things it does is go look for his family), but it doesn't have his personality (Mercer was a sociopath who unleashed a flesh eating virus on the world, and the virus ends up protecting the city in between you eating a bunch of people for fun of course). So it grows into its own being.

This guy is right about the virus preserving consumed memories, however the virus didn’t preseve mercer’s memories because he was already dead when the virus bonded to him. The only reason he thought he was mercer was because he heard the morticians call him that when they were about to cut him open in the beginning of the game. The reason he still calls himself mercer is that by the time he realizes that he’s not mercer, he’d already adopted the identity as his own. By then he’d came to care about dana was basically like, “This is my life now”

That was such a great anti-hero (real anti-hero, not milktoast batman faggotry) concept. Virus becomes a violent defender of mankind even while it preys upon it. In other words, it's a Virus that parasitically co-exists with mankind. I'd have liked a dynamic of him representing that while the anti-christ ultimate specimen kid represents the Mercer in the sequel who wants to make everyone one to stop the meanness. The game is probably my favorite superhero game I've played.

Perfect world I'd have stuck with that for Prototype 2, and that or Prototype3 would have Mercer vs the ultimate life form kid.

Shame about the twist, the dangerous entity being a nicer person than the human who's body it took is something that's not done often enough for my taste.

I don't get the praise for this or Infamous, it was two middle of the road open world games from back in the day. Not that special either of them.

Infamous is more of a third-person shooter, while Prototype is a character action game that simply has no emphasis on combos. As far as super hero games go, there aren't many to choose from, and Prototype 1 and 2 were very good for what they were. If that kind of gameplay and power fantasy wasn't something you cared for, I get that, but they really are special due to just how few games like them there actually are. I think the last notable one that even came out was fucking Saints Row 4 of all things.
