The XB1 abroad the USA isn't that obscure. Mexico is basically Xbox territory and in South America it's a popular alternative, specially among people that only care for sports game and CoD/BF.

But with most games I find it doesn’t make much of a difference, especially since consoles like the Xbox one x and ps4 pro are so powerful now, not to mention that devs make games to the specs of consoles. I admit pc is a bit better, but not marginally better like it used to be, and there’s the obvious benefit that consoles are typically used on tv screens and I have a pretty nice tv in my living room, and I enjoy sitting on a couch compared to a desk

Xbone turned it around for me. I bought a ps4 and wasnt even goin to buy a bone but got as a gift. I use it more since i unironically prefer the multiplayer games like gears, halo 5, forza and backwards compatibility + cheap gamepass to the mostly single player exclusives on ps4.
Most of them are sold in the US, where the parity of sales between the PS4 and XB1 is much closer than in Europe and Asia.
I own all 3 consoles and my PS4 is such a paperweight I actually just basically gave it to my friend. The exclusives they have aren't really appealing, and most of the really good games this gen are multiplatform. The only exclusives I really played this gen have been SoT, both Horizons, Gears of War 4, and Spider-Man. The XB1 has kept my attention mostly.
The people buying XB1s just don't care about "cine-games" like Uncharted, Last of Us, the torturous Souls games, etc. While they might have their fanbase I don't think they are the killer apps that people online try and make them out to be.
The other thing to note, as an American I really don't know many people who have a PS4. They are always the odd man out, bitching about having no one to play with in my circles. We all have XB1s.

As a counter example, everyone has a switch around here, a handful of PS4s, and no one has an XBox except small black children.
I'm in similar straits though I genuinely want to get more mileage out of my PS4 since I've built up a sizeable backlog of its exclusives. The XPad layout is just so much more ergonomic to use as a controller, and most multiplats run comparably to how they run on PS4.

Xbox controller is one of the best and they have some decent games. PS4/Switch is just a personal preference for me but all consoles are decent in their own right.
im not even thinking of indie games and "hidden gems". there are some popular games that will never be released on console. controller limitations mean a lot of games will remain pc only. even if every single ps4/xbone/switch/gamecube owner wanted a total war game for ps4, it will never happen.
