Modern games are far more complex than older games.
In the old days these little features were probably added by one of their small dev team in their spare time because it was fun.
These days you'd probably need to get it through committee and it would probably break something else.

New Leaf itself was great, but everything that resulted from it spells trouble for the future of Animal Crossing. Not to mention those that started with NL have a pretty different perception of the series due to reasons listed above, and they now make up about half of the fanbase. But I suppose there's not much use in worrying over all this until a month from now, when we'll actually get to see the future of this franchise.

The Elder Scrolls, though it's more about each Beth Studios game having less soul than the last one, it hurts a lot more with TES because the development process seems to be very interesting but it all ends up feeling like manufactured shit.
