As someone who was a teenager during the 90's, it indeed is a fantasy.
People just stayed silent or looked at the window. Smartphones didn't really changed things.

smartphones and easy access to the internet magnify the problems of human tribalism. Now your dumb fringe thoughts that the earth is flat is supported by hundreds of other people all over the world and the delusion gets more and more cemented as more and more wackjob conspiracies made up by other members of your tribe start to become truths to you. Theres no need to wonder if you're wrong if everyone on your phone says you're right.
Its hard to dilute that into a woke cartoon though so they fall on "we live in a society"
