The next series immediately picked up where the second left off, so for all intents and purposes it's the same series whose numbering restarts in the middle. That goes on another 38 issues before ending, but only because the writer left. The issue of the third (really second) series started the next month with its new writer and another #1 issue.

Meanwhile, in the comics themselves, every single event book they are involved in devolves to having Reed needing to act as a supervillain in order to save the world. Destroying multiverses comes to mind.
AND THEN Todd McFarlane of Image Comics bought all of Eclipse's assets and snuck in the start of a Miracleman origin story in one of Images own books to lay claim to Miracleman.
The courts finally decreed that Marvel Comic was the legal owner of the 'Captain Marvel' name. DCs Captain Marvel would be (slowly renamed to) Shazam, and Neil Gaiman / Todd McFarlane never owned the rights to a 'Marvel' character in the first place.
im not sure whether Marvel Comics bought anything from Neil /Todd or just did this , but Marvel reprinted the Eclipse Miracleman series and then never used the character, turning their own Ms Marvel into Captain Marvel (who's costume looks an awful lot like Miracleman's), and a new Ms Marvel who has body morphing powers that gives artists a reason to draw her poorly.
