The gameplay is much worse on the ports, the DS version is much better. That aside you can still experience the great story and soundtrack (in higher quality too), but you'll miss out on the best jrpg gameplay out there.

First of all that’s pretty based. Secondly it really does seem like TWEWY is the sort of game for me. Beyond the music and aesthetics, which I’m already impressed with, both the story and the cast seems very fleshed out and engaging. Which is reassuring, because if you couldn’t tell before, I’m really tired of experiencing the story of a nice looking cardboard cutout and its friends.
Actually, hopefully it’s not too off-topic to ask, what are other games that feature a protagonist that’s their own character, as well as a party or cast that continues to grow and develop even after they join the protag’s journey? I’m playing FFX right now, and it’s doing a good job of that with Tidus and the rest of the group, and it sounds like TWEWY will fulfil the same craving.

TWEWY was very clearly designed to take advantage of every single nook and cranny of the DS. The fact that it can even be ported to the Switch while only losing "a lot" is a minor miracle. The biggest crime of the Wii U's failure is that it is probably the only other system (outside of the 3DS I guess) that a TWEWY port could be done more or less faithfully.

Music is really captivating even on the DS’ speakers, the characters are already so vivid and full of energy, Shiki needs a hug.
